Dolpa, very remote and backward part of the country has wonderful cliffs various types of layers rocks, gorges and hills. It runs parallel to the image of the Shangri-la of the Nepal in many aspects. The nature and culture of the place is rich almost beyond nature. The deepest lake of Nepal, Shey –Phokshundo lies here (706 square km), located an altitude of 3600m. The other small lake like Jagadulla, Sundaha , Sukdaha,  Dudkunda Pahada , Chhamkune and Gyalwara are also worth visiting place while there. Attractive snowy peaks including Kanjiriba 6639m, Dhaulatiri 6921m, Churen Himal 7381m, Puth 7249m, Mukot Himal 6639m, Araniko Chuli 6034m, can be seen from the trek.

The northern Dolpa is Buddhist domain while the southern area is Hindu influenced. However, we will find both their religion coexisting in many parts. Balatripura Sundiri temple of Tripurakot is a temple where devotes of both Hindu and Buddhist observe religious activity. There are over 130 Gompas. She – Gumba monastery is also the attraction.

Shey- Phokshundo, the largest National Park of the Nepal, established in 1984 with an area of 3555 sq.km is a shelter for Blue Sheep, Himalayan black beer, Leopards, Wolves and the exclusive snow leopard. Other high altitude lakes hot water springs, wide glacial valleys, high passes, and the crystal blue fresh water lakes are the main attraction of Dolpa. The Bonpo Tribe people (former Buddhist followers) are unique in their cultural and social tradition. They speak Tarali language (Kaike) which is believed to exist only in Dolpa. There are 200 spices of birds, 32 kinds of mammals and about 417 kinds of precious herbal like Yarsagumba, Panchaunle and Jatamasi which is the income source   of locals. Here are more than 400 species herbal plants used mainly by locals’ doctor Amchis. One of the main attractions of the Dolpa is the wild mushroom Yarshagumba which is believed to significantly improve human health, fitness and tonic. This is collected in April-May.

Dolpa is divided in to two parts the lower parts and upper Dolpa. The Upper Dolpa is opened for tourist since 1992. The district was familiarized to the rest world after the production of ‘caravan’ film based on the social life and natural research of the district. The famous film maker Eric Valli choice the district for the visualization of Oscar nominated "Caravan". 

Lower to Upper Dolpo is one of the hard as well as exciting trek which requires at least 2 people to get the Special Restricted Area Trekking Permit. The trek begins after taking flight from Kathmandu - Nepalgunj and then to Dolpo (Jhuphal). Upon reaching on Jhuphal airport we head towards the Lower Dolpo area like: Dunai, Chekpa and Ringmo. On the way we can experience the different Tibetan Buddhist culture which is beautiful as well as unique than other places of Nepal. Also, in Ringo village, where Phoksundo lake exists, we can see beautiful and very traditional settlement of the people. As we trek further, we begin to reach Upper Dolpo region like: Shey Gompa, Namagung, Saldang, Rakyo, Dhortarap, Ghyamgar & Chhyugar. During this trek we can experience different and mind-blowing landscape which feels surreal and exotic.

Trip itinerary

Arrival in Kathmandu. Our correspondence will come to pick you up in the airport, you will be met, greeted and transported to the hotel. Overnight in hotel.

Free day in Kathmandu for sightseeing, meanwhile the office staffs will prepare Special Restricted Area Permit in immigration. Clients can visit UNESCO listed world heritage sites: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath & Swoyambhunath. Overnight at hotel. 

This day we will have breakfast in the hotel, and then get ready for the flight to Nepalgunj. We will drive to Kathmandu TIA airport at about 11 pm and fly to Nepalgunj whcih takes about 1 hour by flight. From the airport, we will head towards the hotel in Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj lies in the Terai Region of Nepal, close to India border. Overnight at hotel. 

This day in the early morning we will fly to Juphal, after about 45 minutes we will reach Juphal; and from there we will begin our trek towards Dunai. On the way we will pass through the beautiful villages and after walkign about 3-4 hours we will reach Dunai. We will spend the night in a camping tent. 

This day we will have breakfast in the morning. Then after we will walk for about 6 hours to reach Chekpa, crossing jungles and walking along the bank of the Phoksundo Khola river. Overnight in camping tent. 

This day after having breakfast we will walk for about 7 hours through uphill trails, crossing jungles and rivers to reach Ringmo village. We will have lunch on the way before we reach Ringmo. Ringmo is a beautiful village with the settlement of Tibetan Buddhist people. We can still see the old houses and landscapes upon reaching the village. We can see womens making the local dresses in a traditional style while we enter the Ringmo village. Also, there is this majestical Phokdundo Lake in Ringmo Village. Overnight in camping tent / lodge.

Rest day in Ringmo to explore around Ringmo Village & Phoksundo Lake. We can also visit one of the old ancient monastery nearby Phoksundo Lake and meet the monks there on the monastery. Overnight in camping tent / lodge.

This day after having breakfast we will head towards the Upper Dolpo part of the trek. We will have to walk for approximately 6 and a half hours through ascending and descending trails, crossing the Phoksundo Khola River to reach Bagala Phedi. Along the way we can see mesmerizing view of Mt. Kanjirowa. Overnight in camping tent.

This day after having breakfast, we will head towards Gandala Phedi. To reach there, we will walk for about 7 hours through uphill and some downhill trails, mainly through grasslands. On the way we can see yaks and sheep grazing in these grasslands.  Overnight in camping tent / lodge.

This day after having breakfast, we will head towards Shey Gompa. We will have to walk for about 7 hours and pass through the Gandala Pass (5110 m) walking uphill trails till there and then downhill trials to reach Shey Gompa. From the pass we can see beautiful views of himalayas like: Mount Kanjirowa and others. Also, we will pass through the meadows adn along the way we will see Tangtung Lake as well. Overnight in camping tent / lodge.

 

Shey Gompa monastery is believed to be the spiritual heart of Upper Dolpa. The monastery was established on 11th century. It is a buddhist monastery representing the culture and traiditions of Bon Buddhists following the Bon religion. It is located beneath the Crystal Peak on a small grassland in the confluence of two rivers. Today, we will explore around the Gompa and their unique Tibetan Buddhist culture. Overnight in camping tent / lodge.

 

This day we will walk for about 7 hours, crossing the Sela La pass (5094 m) walking along up and down trails. Overnight in camping tent / lodge.

This day we will walk for about 7 hours through uphill and downhill trails, crossing through meadows and desert lands.  Overnight in camping tent / lodge.

This day we will have breakfast and descend towards Jhuphal. It will take us around six and a half hours, mainly on the flat or downhill to reach Dunai, continuing for half an hour on the flat and an hour and a half uphill, to arrive and conclude the trek in Juphal. Overnight at lodge.

This day we will take a flight of about 50 minutes, if the weather conditions allow it. After landing in Nepalganj, we will make a connecting flight to Kathmandu. Overnight in hotel.

This day will be a free day in Kathmandu. In meantime we can do sightseeing at the different places listed in UNESCO World Heritage Sites like: Boudha, Pashupatinath, Swoyambhu and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Overnight at hotel.
