Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of the challenging as well as beautiful trekking destination which lies in the Eastern Nepal. This is one of less explored destination with the less flow of tourist on the route. This trek is the gateway to explore the diverse culture and serene nature of the eastern side of Nepal.

Mount Makalu (8463 m) is the 5th tallest mountain of the world. The word 'Makalu' signifies the greatness and black one because of its dark brooding appearance. During the trekking in Manaslu Region we can experience the beautiful and evergreen Rhododendron forests along with the panoramic views of eight-thousanders like: Mount Everest (8848 m), Mount Lhotse (8516 m), Mount Makalu (8463m), Mount Kanchenjunga (8568 m) and so on..

Makalu Base Camp Trek of 16 trekking days start by taking the scenic 45 minutes flight to Tumlingtar. Upon reaching Tumlingtar, we will drive towards Num village and the trek passes through the Seduwa, Tashigaon, Khongma La, Mumbuk, Yangri Kharka, Langma Le Kharka and finally Makalu Base Camp (4870 m). The fifth-highest peak in the world, Mount Makalu, is one of the many stunning vistas that can be seen from the Makalu Base Camp Trek. In addition, trekkers will be able to glimpse peaks like Ama Dablam, Chamlang, and Baruntse.

During the Makalu Base Camp trek, we will explore the floras and faunas of Makalu Barun National Park, if we are lucky then we can see snow leopard as well. This trek is suitable for the ones who have good level of physical fitness. Best time to do this trek is in the Spring (April – May) and Autumn (September – November). Along with the wilderness and mountains we also get to witness the Sherpa culture, local terraced farming, local communities and hospitality of people of Eastern Region during this trek.

Trip itinerary

Arrival in Kathmandu. You will be met, greeted and transported to the hotel. Overnight at hotel. 

Fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar (410 m.) takes about 45 minutes. If weather is clear, we can see breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains and hills from the flight to the eastern part of Nepal. After Arrival at Tumlingtar and drive to Num, which takes 6 hours to reach to Num. Overnight at lodge.

Trek from Num to Seduwa takes about four and half hours. The trail descends steeply for about 2 and half hours until you come to a big river named Neguwa Khola. The trail passes over the suspension bridge and ascends through forest and a few traditional villages. People of this area are mainly engaged in agriculture and crops grown here are paddy, millet, potatoes and vegetables depending on the season. There is a check post and local office of the Makalu Conservation Area. Stay overnight at lodge or camp in Seduwa. Overnight at lodge.

Trek from Seduwa to Tashigaon takes about four hours. The trail slightly ascends but the major part of the hike is flat and easy through the bushes. While walking, you will see villages at a far distance. Tashigaon, surrounded by verdant forest, is a big Sherpa village. You will find prayer flags fluttering in the wind whispering odes of prayers for the dead and forgotten in and around the village. The camping spot in this village is really a praiseworthy site. Stay overnight at lodge or camp in Tashigaon. Overnight at lodge.

Rest and acclimatization day

Trek from Tashigaon to Kauma takes about six hours. The trail ascends throughout the day and you will walk through forest of Rhododendrons and Sal trees until you reach your destination. Kongma la is a ridge and there is only one tea house here. This is also a perfect place for camping. It snows here even during the spring months of March and April. Stay overnight at camp in Khongma La. Overnight at lodge.

Trek from Kauma to Mumbuk takes about six and half hours. The trail ascends and then following a rugged path you reach a beautiful lake named “Kalo Pokhari” at the height of (4004 m). Leaving this lake, you go downhill until you reach Mumbuk. It is a serene camping spot surrounded by green forests. Overnight at lodge.

Trek from Mumbuk to Yangri Kharka takes about four and half hours. The hike today is a bit adventurous and strenuous. The trail passes for about 3 hours through a landscape which is very prone to landslides. The Barun River running through the trail adds more dimensions to the trek with its spectacular views of Mt. Tutse (Peak 6) 6739m and Peak 7 (6185m.). Overnight at lodge.

Trek from Yangri Kharka to Langma Le Kharka takes about five - six hours. The trail ascends through grasslands and forest. You can enjoy the majestic peaks such as Mt. Tutse (Peak 6) 6739m, Peak 7 (6185m), Isuwa La (5340m) and many other unnamed mountains and peaks. Overnight at lodge.

Trek from Langma Le Kharka to Makalu Base Camp takes about four hours. The hike passes through a flat trail and will descend to a Perennial River. As you reach Makalu Base Camp, you will be mesmerized by the views of Mt. Makalu (8463m), Baruntse (7152m), Kali Himal (6985m), Chamlang (7390m) and Makalu II (7640 m), etc. Overnight at lodge.

Trek from Makalu Base Camp to Yangri Kharka. This takes about four and a half hours. After ascending for a few hours, the trail moves along a flat level path and at the end it descends to reach Yangri Kharka. En route, you walk through a rocky forest path with views of green hills and huge stones at some distance. Stay overnight at lodge or camp in Yangri Kharka.

Trek from Yangle Kharka to Dobato takes about four and half hours. The trail ascends for almost three hours through the same landscape and possibility of landslides. You then have to trek uphill passing through jungles all the way to Dobato. This is not a village but a camping place only. Here, you find small bushes of rhododendrons. Stay overnight at lodge or camp in Dobato.

Trek from Dobato to Tashigaon takes about six hours. The trail descends steeply to Khongma la via Kali Pokhari through a dense jungle. You again walk along a downhill path all the way to Tashigaon. Stay overnight at lodge or camp in Tashigaon.

Trek from Tashigaon to Num which takes about five hours. The trail steeply descends in the beginning which changes to a steep ascent before reaching Num. You pass through small forests of bamboo and small villages. Stay overnight at lodge in Num.

Drive to Tumlingtar by jeep takes about 6 hours. Stay overnight at hotel/lodge in Tumlingtar.

Early morning flight from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel. Stay overnight at hotel in Kathmandu.

This day you will be free for various activities such as shopping ,sightseeing and etc. Overnight at hotel.

Transfer to airport, departure on your own destination.
