The trek of the Upper Mustang is one of the popular destinations and best accepted by hikers. Here hikers can explore ancient monasteries, diversified societies with more than local tribes, sphere of influence with Tibetan culture are the magnetism of this neighborhood. This place is located in the western range of the Himalayas and the adjacent plateau of the Tibetan border of Nepal. Mustang is a rain-shaded area suitable for trekking during monsoons. Mustangi Raja, the only king of the state of Nepal, vestiges on the riverbank is another charisma on the walk. To walk farther from Kagbeni, hikers need a special trekking permit. The Manthang, the ancient capital, presents the ampliomagnetism and the sound of unique walled settlements, local culture, rituals and their way of life. This region is full of some of Nepal's oldest Buddhist monasteries, ancient isolated villages with beautiful whitewashed houses.

This trekking route was opened only a few years ago and the entry is limited  non-Nepali visitors even these days and require special trekking consent ( Special Trekking Permit)  to pass through the upper Mustang from Kagbeni. The highest point of the trek is only 3870 m but the situation may be difficult to accomplish. Lo Manthang, a prior capital also offers a unique attraction with its walled settlements, local aesthetics, traditions and their way of life.Ponies can be hired as the convenience of trekkers.  The trail to Lo Manthang passes through the ups and downs of the elevated regions of massive side of the Kali Gandakivalley.  The region also possesses some ancient Buddhist monasteries and untouched medieval period villages with white washed houses.

The literal meaning of Kagbeni is “bolt at the two Rivers”. Thus Mustang is a must visit place with the beauty and cultural importance.

Trip itinerary

Arrival in Kathmandu and you will be transferred to hotel.

This day we have to prepare the upper Mustang  permit ( Restricted Area Pemit). You will have a free day in Kathmandu and you do the sightseeing in Kathmandu in the places like: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swoyambhu, Pashupati, Boudhha, and more....

Early morning fly / drive to Pokhara by flight / private vehicle / tourist bus. You will reach Pokhara after 7/8 hours drive.In Flight it will take 25 minutes. Overnight at hotel in Pokhara.

Early morning you have to take flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. It takes about 20 minutes to reach Jomsom (2710m). Then the trek starts from Jomsom towards Kagbeni. We will walk almost straight trail along the bank of Kaligandai river. After walking for about 1 and half hour we will reach Ekle Batti. After walking for about 45 minutes we will reach Kagbeni (2800m). In the evening we will visit ancient monastery and Kagbeni village. Overnight at lodge / tented camp in Kagbeni.

 

This morning after having breakfast we will pass the restricted area of Kagbeni and enter the beautiful Upper Mustang. After three hours of trekking we will reach Tangbe, a small but wonderful village. We will visit this fortress town and walk through its labyrinthine streets. From here we will continue to Chhuksang. Overnight in Lodge.

We will walk through the Kali Gandaki, called the Mustang Khola. We will cross a recently built bridge to the village of Chele, which is a clean village located on a hill that allows us to see all the movements of the valley and its people. We will begin to notice the change in ethnic groups. The path continues to climb until we reach a plateau from where we will see the walled village of Gyagar. Then we will go down to the typical village of Samar. Overnight in Lodge.

We will have two ways to get to Geling: the simplest will take us about 4 hours. The other follows the "pilgrims' way" and takes more time, but we will take the latter. At the beginning it is a steep descent that will take us into a canyon that will seem to us to be in another world, here we will find sacred caves venerated by the inhabitants of the area, especially a Chorten in the shape of a Stalactite. We will continue the road through another spectacular canyon to Shyangmochen (3,700 meters) where it joins the main road. After crossing another 3,860-meter pass we will go down to Geling. Overnight in Lodge.

In the morning, we will visit to the monastery of Geling. The road will ascend to 4,395 meters and then descend to the village of Gemi. Here we will eat at a local house. Then a steep path will lead us to Tramar. We will be able to observe large red rocks on the horizon.  Overnight in Lodge.

A steep climb will take us to the monastery of Lo Gekar, built in the eleventh century. The road continues to the large village of Tsarang, where we will camp.  Around this village we will have many points of interest to visit, including the large Chortens (stupas). Overnight in Lodge.

When we leave Tsarang we will pass near a turbine that gives electricity to the city, several mills and a large Chorten. We will walk through a dry valley that will become greener, we will reach a pass at 3,870 meters full of prayer flags. From here a gentle walk will take us to the walls of Lo Manthang, capital of the Mustang kingdom. Overnight in Lodge.
Generally, we will have the opportunity, if we wish, to be received by the King. By paying a tribute to the King we can exchange a tea with him with salt and butter. We will stroll through the narrow streets of this ancient city visiting old monasteries with their beautiful paintings and the square of the Royal Palace. Overnight in Lodge.
Today we will cross the pass over Lo Manthang again. The path will continue up the Mustang Valley. On the way we will see the village of Dhie, and the steep descent will end in a lunar atmosphere. Overnight in Lodge.
The trail starts down to Ghechang Khola and then climbs up to 3,800 meters before heading back down to the camp near Tange. Visit this remote village with amazing architecture, especially its wonderful Chortens (stupas). Accommodation in a local house.

This day we will walk towards Tetang, we have to walk one and half hour straight crossing river stream and then ascend 3 hours towards Paha. There is a house for hindu pilgrims which is called Thanti then after countinus walk uphill for about half an hour straight and again walk downhill crossing river stream. If we want to Kagbeni we will stay at Chusang and if we want to go Muktinath we have to walk uphill towards Tetang village. Overnight at lodge/local house/tented camp.

This day we will almost ascend around 7 hours towards Gylaula Pass (4080m). After crossing Pass we will reach Muktinath. Muktinath is the religious place. There you can see the Muktinath temple where lots of people come from various parts to take bath and it is believed that their soul is purified after taking bath. Overnight at lodge/hotel/tented camp.

 

We will walk 1 and half  hours towards Jomsom through Jharkot Gompa. Jhorkot Gompa is also one of the ancient Gompa.  After walking 5 hours or by jeep drive we will reach Jomsom. Overnight at lodge/hotel/tented camp.

Early morning we fly Jomsom Kathmandu via Pokhara and transfer to hotel.

 

This day we will have a free day for shopping and other activities such as Kathmandu city sightseeing etc. Overnight at  hotel.

 

Transfer to airport and fly to your destination.
