Essential Information

Best Time to Visit Kailash Mansarovar

The best time to visit Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar is from May to October, when the weather is relatively stable, temperatures are milder, and the roads and trekking trails are generally accessible. During these months, pilgrims can enjoy clear mountain views, pleasant daytime temperatures, and favourable conditions for completing the sacred Kailash Kora.

  • May and June: These months are considered excellent months for the pilgrimage. The weather is usually dry with clear skies, offering spectacular views of Mount Kailash and the surrounding Himalayan landscapes. Temperatures are comfortable during the day, making it an ideal time for both pilgrimage and sightseeing.
  • July and August: These months are spiritually significant because of the Saga Dawa Festival, one of the most important Buddhist festivals in Tibet. Thousands of pilgrims gather at Mount Kailash during this period to celebrate the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of Lord Buddha. Although there may be occasional rainfall on the Nepal side of the journey, the Tibetan Plateau generally receives less rainfall, and the pilgrimage remains popular.
  • September: It is another excellent month to visit Kailash Mansarovar. The monsoon season gradually ends, the skies become clearer, and the mountain scenery is exceptionally beautiful. The weather remains stable, and there are fewer crowds compared to the peak pilgrimage months.
  • October: The pilgrimage season generally concludes by October as temperatures begin to drop and weather conditions become increasingly unpredictable. During late autumn and winter, heavy snowfall and extremely cold temperatures make travel to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar difficult and, in some cases, inaccessible.

For the best experience, we recommend planning your Kailash Mansarovar Tour via Hilsa by Helicopter between May and October, when weather conditions, visibility, and pilgrimage arrangements are at their most favourable.

Permits Required for Kailash and Mansarovar Lake via Hilsa, Nepal

Traveling to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar via the Hilsa route requires several permits and travel documents issued by both the Nepalese and Chinese authorities. As the region lies within the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, independent travel is not permitted, and all pilgrims must travel through an authorized tour operator.

The following permits are required for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage via Hilsa:

1. Special Restricted Area Permit:  Hilsa lies within Nepal's restricted area near the Nepal-Tibet border; therefore, all foreign travelers are required to obtain a Special Restricted Area Permit (RAP) before entering the region. The permit fee is: USD 50 per person for the first 7 days and USD 10 per person per day for each additional day beyond the initial week.

2. Chinese Group Visa: All foreign pilgrims entering Tibet from Nepal must obtain a Chinese Group Visa, which is issued through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. Individual Chinese visas obtained from other countries are not valid for entry into Tibet from Nepal.

3. Tibet Travel Permit (TTP): The Tibet Travel Permit is a mandatory document issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau, allowing travelers to enter and travel within the Tibet Autonomous Region.

4. Alien's Travel Permit (ATP): This permit is required for travel to restricted areas outside Lhasa, including Purang (Taklakot), Lake Mansarovar, and Mount Kailash.

5. Military Permit and Foreign Affairs Permit: Since Mount Kailash and the western Tibetan region are considered sensitive border areas, additional permits from the military and foreign affairs authorities of Tibet are required.

There is no need to worry about the permit arrangements. Asian Adventure Treks & Expedition will handle all necessary paperwork and process the Restricted Area Permit on your behalf, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free journey to Kailash and Mansarovar via Hilsa.

The town offers a fascinating glimpse into Tibetan culture and lifestyle, with its monasteries, prayer wheels, and stunning mountain scenery creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Depending on weather and local conditions, you may also witness a spectacular sunset over the lake and the distant views of Mount Kailash, creating an unforgettable experience.

Spend the evening immersed in the serenity and spiritual atmosphere of this sacred place before retiring for the night at a guesthouse near Lake Mansarovar. Overnight stay at guest house in Lake Mansarovar.

Wake up early to witness the serene beauty of Lake Mansarovar and the surrounding Himalayan landscape. Pilgrims may take part in morning prayers, meditation, or perform sacred rituals on the shores of the holy lake. For many devotees, taking a holy bath and collecting the sacred water of Mansarovar is one of the most meaningful moments of the pilgrimage.

After breakfast, bid farewell to the sacred lake and begin the short drive to Darchen, a small Tibetan town located at the base of the holy Mount Kailash. The journey offers magnificent views of the vast Tibetan Plateau and, weather permitting, spectacular glimpses of the north and south faces of Mount Kailash.

Darchen is the starting and ending point of the famous three-day Kailash Kora (circumambulation). Upon arrival, check into your guesthouse and spend the rest of the day resting and acclimatizing. Pilgrims can take a short walk around the town, make final preparations for the Kora, and receive a briefing from the guide regarding the trekking route, altitude, and necessary precautions.

Overnight stay at guest house in Darchen.

After an early breakfast in Darchen, begin the first day of the sacred Mount Kailash Outer Kora. A short drive takes you to Yamadwar, also known as the "Gateway of the God of Death." This revered site marks the official starting point of the Kailash Kora and holds deep spiritual significance for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims.

From Yamadwar, start the trek towards Dirapuk, following a gentle trail through the beautiful Lha Chu Valley. The path gradually ascends alongside a flowing river, surrounded by dramatic cliffs, colorful prayer flags, and the rugged landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau. Throughout the journey, pilgrims are rewarded with increasingly spectacular views of the sacred Mount Kailash.

As you approach Dirapuk, the magnificent North Face of Mount Kailash comes into full view. The sight of the towering, snow-covered peak is considered one of the most spiritual and memorable moments of the entire pilgrimage. Many pilgrims spend time in prayer, meditation, and quiet reflection while admiring the sacred mountain.

After trekking for approximately 5–6 hours, arrive at Dirapuk and check into a simple guesthouse. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and the breathtaking sunset views over Mount Kailash, weather permitting. Overnight stay at Guest House in Dirapuk.

Today is the most challenging and spiritually significant day of the Mount Kailash Outer Kora. Begin the trek early in the morning, leaving Dirapuk behind and gradually ascending towards the sacred Dolma La Pass (5630 m), the highest point of the pilgrimage. The climb is steep and demanding, but the spectacular scenery and deep spiritual atmosphere make the journey truly rewarding.

The pass is named after Goddess Dolma (Tara), the Buddhist goddess of compassion and salvation. Pilgrims believe that crossing Dolma La symbolizes spiritual rebirth and the shedding of past sins. The pass is adorned with colorful prayer flags, prayer stones, and offerings left by devotees from around the world.

After spending some time at the pass, begin the steep descent towards the beautiful Gauri Kund, a sacred emerald lake associated with Goddess Parvati in Hindu mythology. Pilgrims often stop here briefly for prayers and to admire its stunning setting amidst the rugged mountains.

The trail then continues through rocky terrain and gradually descends into a broad valley leading to Zuthulpuk. The surrounding landscapes become gentler, with streams, grasslands, and impressive rock formations accompanying the final section of the trek.

After approximately 9–10 hours of trekking, arrive at Zuthulpuk, named after the famous cave of the Tibetan yogi and saint, Milarepa. Check into a simple guesthouse and rest after completing the most demanding and rewarding day of the Kailash Kora. Overnight stay at Guest House in Zuthulpuk.

After breakfast, begin the final day of the sacred Mount Kailash Outer Kora. The trail from Zuthulpuk is relatively easy and follows a gentle path through beautiful valleys, streams, and open landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau. Along the way, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and reflect on the spiritual journey completed around the holy mountain.

After trekking for approximately 2–3 hours, reach the point where the Kailash Kora officially ends near Darchen. This marks the completion of one of the world's most revered pilgrimages, a deeply meaningful achievement for devotees and adventure seekers alike.

After meeting the vehicle, drive back through the vast Tibetan landscapes towards the Nepal–Tibet border. The journey offers final views of the remote plateau, traditional Tibetan settlements, and magnificent Himalayan scenery. Upon reaching Hilsa, check into the guesthouse and rest after the long but rewarding day.

Overnight stay at Hilsa, with memories of the sacred Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar pilgrimage that will last a lifetime.

After an early breakfast, board a helicopter from Hilsa and fly back to Simikot, enjoying one last aerial view of the spectacular Himalayan landscapes and the remote valleys of Humla. Upon arrival in Simikot, connect with the scheduled flight to Nepalgunj.

The scenic flight from Simikot to Nepalgunj marks the end of your Himalayan pilgrimage through Tibet and the sacred Mount Kailash region. Upon arrival in Nepalgunj, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a well-deserved rest after the memorable and spiritually fulfilling journey.

Overnight stay at Hotel in Nepalgunj.

This day after having breakfast take flight to Nepalgunj or drive towards India Border. Stay overnight at hotel in Kathmandu.

Enjoy your last day in Kathmandu before departure. At your scheduled departure time, our correspondent will pick you up from the hotel, transfer you to the airport, and bid you farewell with warm hearts.
