Rolwaling – Pachermo Peak Trek: Remote Valleys, Snowy Peaks & True Adventure

Rolwaling–Pachermo Peak Climbing is an intense high-altitude adventure that blends remote Himalayan trekking with the excitement of a non-technical peak climb. This 18-day journey leads you through the quiet and magical Rolwaling Valley, across the dramatic Tashi Lapcha Pass (5755 m), and ends in the summit of Pachermo Peak (6273 m) — offering a rare experience for seasoned trekkers and beginner climbers.

The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Chhetchhet, followed by a short uphill hike to Simigaon, a Sherpa and Tamang village with ancient Buddhist monasteries. From there, the trail steadily climbs through lush forests, alpine ridges, and remote yak pastures, passing through Kelthang Kharka, Beding, and Na Gaon — the last permanent settlement in the valley. Along the way, you’ll witness beautiful views of Mount Gaurishankar, Melungtse, and the glacial rivers cutting through this untouched landscape.

A key highlight is the Tsho Rolpa Lake, one of Nepal’s largest glacial lakes, surrounded by towering peaks and deep silence. From Na, the trail becomes more challenging as you trek across the rugged Trakarding Glacier toward Thakkarding and Pachermo Base Camp, moving deeper into remote, high-altitude terrain.

After a night at the high camp near Tashi Lapcha, you’ll cross the pass using fixed ropes and basic mountaineering equipment. This section demands good fitness, proper acclimatization, and the support of experienced guides. After the pass, the route takes you to Pachermo Peak High Camp, from where you'll attempt the summit early the next morning. The ascent is steady but involves walking on snow and ice with the help of crampons, ice axe, and ropes. From the summit, you'll be rewarded with jaw-dropping panoramas of the Rolwaling Himal, Cho Oyu, Everest, and even distant peaks like Makalu.

The descent follows a scenic trail into the Khumbu (Everest) region, stopping at Phedi, Thame, and finally Namche Bazaar, the busy Sherpa hub. The trek ends at Lukla, from where you’ll catch a short flight back to Kathmandu.

Pachermo Peak Climbing itinerary passes through a restricted area and requires multiple permits such as: Rolwaling Restricted Area Permit, Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit (GCAP), Sagarmatha National Park Permit and Climbing permit for Pachermo Peak (NMA). A minimum of two trekkers and a licensed guide are mandatory.

If you're looking for a remote, culturally rich, and high-adventure trekking peak experience, the Rolwaling–Pachermo Peak Climbing is a perfect match offering solitude, challenge, and unforgettable Himalayan beauty.

Pachermo Peak Climbing Detailed Itinerary

The itinerary can be customized according to your duration of holiday. Similarly hotel can be upgraded or downgraded depending on your requirement.

Starts: Kathmandu
Ends: Kathmandu

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, you will be greeted by our correspondent who will assist with your transfer to the hotel. Once checked in, we will arrange a pre-trip meeting where we will brief in short about the trek, answer any queries you have and meet your trekking guide as well. After the short brief, you can relax and spend rest of the day at your leisure. Stay overnight at the Hotel in Kathmandu.

After an early breakfast in Kathmandu, prepare to begin your journey toward the eastern hills of Nepal. You will drive to Chhetchhet by private vehicle, following scenic highways and countryside roads. As you leave the busy city behind, the landscape gradually changes to peaceful rural areas, small towns, green terraced fields, and river valleys. Along the way, you’ll get beautiful views of hills, waterfalls, and local villages that reflect Nepal’s natural beauty and traditional life.

The drive takes around 8 hours, including breaks for tea, lunch, and photos. The final stretch of the road becomes narrower and more rugged as we approach Chhetchhet, a small riverside village that serves as the gateway to the Rolwaling Valley. Overnight at lodge in Chhetchhet.

Today you will begin your first day of trekking! After breakfast at the lodge in Chhetchhet, start walking toward Simigaon which takes about 3 hours of trekking.

The trail begins with a short walk along the riverside, and soon we’ll cross a long suspension bridge over a roaring river—a fun and exciting start to the day. After the bridge, the trail climbs uphill through beautiful forests filled with chirping birds and the sound of nature. The path is a bit steep in some sections but not too long, and the walk takes around 3 hours in total. As you go higher, you’ll pass by small farms, terraced fields, and traditional houses along the way.

Simigaon is a peaceful village located on a ridge with amazing views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Most of the people here belong to the Tamang and Sherpa communities, two of Nepal’s well-known ethnic groups. The village is also home to a beautiful Buddhist monastery, which we can visit in the evening for a quiet and spiritual experience. Overnight at lodge

After breakfast in Simigaon, you begin our trek toward Kelthang Kharka which takes about 6 hours of walking. Today’s walk is a bit longer, trekking than yesterday and trail mostly climbs uphill through beautiful forested areas.

The first part of the trail leads us through subtropical jungles filled with rhododendron, pine, and other green trees. You might hear birds singing and see small streams along the way. As we gain altitude, the forest becomes quieter and more peaceful, with fewer signs of villages or people. The trail can be steep in some places, but you’ll take it slow and steady, with enough breaks to rest and enjoy the surroundings.

As you approach Kelthang Kharka, the trees start to thin out, and the views open up. From this high pastureland, we’ll get our first close-up views of Mount Gaurishankar, one of the most sacred and stunning peaks in the region. The scenery here feels remote and wild, with fresh mountain air and wide open skies. Overnight at lodge.

After breakfast at Kelthang Kharka, you continue the trek towards Beding which takes about 6 hours of walking. Today’s trekking trial includes both uphill and downhill sections, so you’ll be moving steadily through the beautiful mountain terrain.

The trail leads you through forests of pine and colorful rhododendron trees, especially lovely when the flowers are blooming. Along the way, you’ll cross a few suspension bridges that hang over rushing rivers and deep valleys — these bridges add excitement and give you great views of the landscape below.

As you get closer to Beding, the forest starts to thin, and the mountain views become clearer. Beding is a large village with a strong Sherpa community, known for their warm hospitality and rich culture. Here, you can see traditional stone houses, mani walls (Buddhist prayer walls), and possibly visit a monastery. Overnight at lodge.

After breakfast in Beding, start a shorter and easier day of trekking as you head toward Na. The trail today is mostly flat and straight, making the walk less tiring compared to previous days.

Along the way, you’ll pass through peaceful pine forests, where the fresh scent of pine fills the air. Keep your eyes open for beautiful views of Mount Gaurishankar, which stands tall and majestic nearby. The mountain scenery here is stunning, giving you plenty of chances to take photos and enjoy the calm mountain atmosphere.

You will arrive in Na in time for lunch. Na is a small, quiet village surrounded by high mountains and open valleys. It is the last permanent settlement in the Rolwaling Valley before the trail moves into more remote, high-altitude areas. Overnight at lodge.

Today is an important rest and acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the higher altitude. After breakfast in Na, we will take a gentle hike up to Tso Rolpa Lake (4580 m), one of Nepal’s largest and most beautiful glacial lakes. The trail to the lake is peaceful and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and the deep blue water of the lake itself.

Spending time near Tso Rolpa gives you a chance to enjoy the quiet beauty of this high-altitude valley while helping your body get used to thinner air. After exploring the lake and taking in the amazing scenery, we’ll return to Na for lunch and rest. Overnight at lodge.

After breakfast in Na, prepare to start your trek toward Thakkarding today. The walk takes around 6 hours and covers some challenging but beautiful terrain. At first, the trail climbs steadily uphill from Na up to the edge of Tso Rolpa Lake. This part of the trek offers stunning views of the turquoise glacial lake surrounded by towering mountains.

After reaching Tso Rolpa, the trail changes as you begin to cross the glacier and moraine fields, walking carefully on rocky and icy ground toward Thakkarding. This section requires extra attention as the terrain becomes rougher and more remote. Along the way, you’ll see impressive views of nearby peaks like Yalung Peak and Ramdung Peak, which add to the dramatic mountain scenery. Overnight at tented camp

After breakfast in Thakkarding, prepare to begin today’s trek toward Pachermo Base Camp, which takes about 6 hours of walking.

The trail involves both uphill and downhill sections as we move through high alpine terrain. In the first half hour, we’ll climb steadily uphill before reaching the edge of the Tso Rolpa Glacier. From here, the trail follows alongside the glacier, crossing rocky moraine paths and walking carefully on uneven ground. This area is wild and remote, surrounded by towering snowy peaks.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Mount Gaurishankar, Yalung Peak, and Ramdung Peak—some of the most impressive mountains in the Rolwaling range. The fresh mountain air and dramatic scenery make this a memorable day. Overnight at Tented Camp

Today is the most important day of Pachermo Peak Climbing as you will reach one of the highest altitude pass of Rolwaling trek where you will cross Tashi Lapcha Pass (5755 m).

After an early breakfast at Pachermo Base Camp, start the climb toward Tashi Lapcha High Camp. The trek today takes around 5 - 6 hours and involves steep, challenging terrain as we gain altitude to nearly 5,700 meters.

Part of the route requires us to fix and use a 50-meter climbing rope to safely navigate the final sections leading up to the Tashi Lapcha Pass. This is an important day that requires careful attention and teamwork, as the path includes rocky and icy sections.

Along the way, you will be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of some of the world’s highest mountains, including Mount Everest, Makalu, and the entire Rolwaling Himalayan range. The stunning scenery makes the hard climb worthwhile.

Today's camp will be on the southwest face of Pachermo Peak, where the high camp is located. After arriving, you can rest and prepare your gear for the summit push the next day. Overnight at Tented Camp

After breakfast, prepare to begin your trek from the Tashilapcha Pass High Camp to the Pachermo Peak High Camp. This trek takes around 5 hours and involves walking over high mountain terrain as you get closer to the base of the summit climb.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views of some of the greatest Himalayan peaks, including the Rolwaling range, Makalu, and Mount Everest. The vast snow-capped mountains and deep valleys create a breathtaking backdrop for this part of the journey. Overnight at tented camp.

Today is the most exciting and challenging day of the trek — the summit day!

After an early breakfast at Pachermo Peak High Camp, we begin the climb to the summit of Pachermo Peak, which stands at 6273 meters.

The ascent involves walking carefully over snow and ice, using climbing gear such as crampons, ice axes, and ropes. The climb requires good physical fitness and careful attention to safety, but the reward is incredible. From the top, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of towering Himalayan peaks including Everest, Makalu, and the Rolwaling range — a truly unforgettable sight.

After spending some time at the summit to enjoy the views and take photos, we begin the descent down to Phedi, located at 5,110 meters. The walk downhill takes several hours as we carefully make our way back through high alpine terrain. This is a day you will always remember as one of the highlights of your Himalayan adventure. Overnight at Tented Camp

After breakfast at Phedi, prepare to begin your descent toward Thame Village. Today’s walk takes around 6 hours and mostly follows a downhill trail, making it easier on the legs after the summit climb.

Along the way, you’ll pass through small patches of forest filled with pine and rhododendron trees. The fresh mountain air and peaceful surroundings make for a pleasant walk. You’ll also enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks that tower above the valleys.

Thame is a traditional Sherpa village with a rich cultural heritage. Most of the people here belong to the Sherpa community, known for their warm hospitality and strong mountain traditions. The village has Buddhist monasteries, prayer flags, and stone houses, offering a chance to experience Sherpa culture up close. Overnight at lodge.

After breakfast in Thame, we continue our trek toward Namche Bazaar, the bustling heart of the Everest region. Today’s walk takes around 4 to 5 hours, following trails that go both uphill and downhill through beautiful mountain scenery.

The trail passes through small forests and offers stunning views of the high Himalayan peaks surrounding the area. As we get closer to Namche, the trail becomes busier with other trekkers and locals, giving you a lively glimpse of mountain life.

Namche Bazaar is a vibrant town known for its shops, markets, and cafes. It’s a great place to explore local culture, pick up trekking gear, or just relax after several days of trekking. Overnight at lodge.

After having breakfast in the lodge, we will descend back towards Lukla through the same trial. As we trek back to Lukla we get to spend the last night in the Khumbu region of Everest. We will descend towards Phakding from Lukla in about 3.5 hours have lunch in Phakding. From here, we will again descend towards Lukla through the zigzag trial in another 4.5 hours. The trek involves long days of walking, steep ascents and descents, glacier crossings, and technical climbing sections, especially while crossing the Tashi Lapcha Pass and ascending Pachermo Peak. Key factors that make this trek difficult include:

  • Variable weather conditions including cold temperatures and possible snow
  • Requirement of basic mountaineering skills and equipment for the peak climb and pass crossing
  • Need for good physical fitness, stamina, and proper acclimatization

This trek is not recommended for beginners or those without previous high-altitude trekking experience. With the right preparation, fitness, and a professional guide, it offers an incredibly rewarding adventure for those ready to take on a serious Himalayan challenge.

Altitude Sickness & Remedies on Rolwaling – Pachermo Peak Climbing

Altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), happens when your body has difficulty adjusting to the lower oxygen levels found at high elevations. On the Rolwaling – Pachermo Peak Climb, trekkers sleep above 3,500 meters for multiple nights and climb up to around 5755 meters at Tashi Lapcha Pass, which increases the risk of AMS. Careful acclimatization is very important to stay safe.

Common Symptoms of AMS:

  • Headache
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Dizziness or fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty sleeping or insomnia

Many trekkers start feeling mild symptoms after reaching places like Beding (3690 m) or Na Gaon (4180 m), where the air is thinner.

What to Do If Symptoms Appear:

  1. Ascend Gradually: Follow a slow, well-planned itinerary and take acclimatization days seriously, especially at Na Gaon.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Drink 3–4 liters of water daily. Warm drinks like soup and herbal teas help too. Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine.
  3. Eat Energy-Rich Meals: Even if you don’t feel hungry, eat small frequent meals with carbohydrates such as rice, potatoes, and bread.
  4. Keep Warm: Cold weather can make symptoms worse, so dress in layers and stay dry and warm.
  5. Listen to Your Body: Do not ignore symptoms. Stop ascending and rest if you feel unwell. Inform your guide or group immediately.

Medications & Remedies:

  • Diamox (Acetazolamide): Helps prevent or reduce AMS symptoms. Usually started 1–2 days before going above 3,000–3,500 m. Take only under medical supervision.
  • Pain Relievers: Ibuprofen or paracetamol can ease headaches and discomfort.
  • Natural Remedies: Garlic soup, ginger tea, and local herbal drinks offered in teahouses may relieve mild symptoms.
  • Supplemental Oxygen: Rarely needed but available in emergency kits or with some expedition teams.

Summary Tips:

  • Acclimatize properly
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Eat enough carbohydrates
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Recognize and respond to symptoms early

Pachermo Peak Climbing FAQs

The best time to trek is during the Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May) seasons. During these months, the weather is generally clear with stable skies, making mountain views spectacular. Temperatures are mild and comfortable for trekking. Winter months (December to February) can be extremely cold with heavy snowfall, making the route more difficult and less accessible. The monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rain and slippery trails, increasing the risk of landslides.

This trek is considered challenging and suited for experienced trekkers with good physical fitness. It involves long days of walking on rough and sometimes steep trails, glacier crossings, and technical sections like the Tashi Lapcha Pass and Pachermo Peak climb. Altitudes can reach above 5,700 meters, so proper acclimatization and stamina are essential. Beginners or those with limited trekking experience should prepare well or consider alternative treks.

Accommodation varies throughout the trek. In larger villages like Beding and Na, simple lodges or tea houses provide basic twin-sharing rooms with beds, blankets, and communal bathrooms. These lodges are comfortable but rustic, with limited heating. In remote high-altitude sections, camping with tents is necessary. Camps include sleeping mats and meals but expect colder nights and fewer amenities. Carrying a warm sleeping bag is essential.

Most trekking packages include three meals a day—breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The meals usually feature traditional Nepali cuisine such as dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, soups, potatoes, and eggs. Some lodges also offer simple international dishes like pasta and pancakes. Food options may be limited in remote areas, so it’s good to carry some personal snacks or energy bars.

Yes, vegetarian and vegan options are generally available in tea houses and camps. However, dietary restrictions such as gluten-free or allergies may be harder to accommodate. It’s important to inform your trekking agency and guides ahead of time so they can prepare accordingly. Carrying some personal specialty food items is also recommended.

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. Your insurance should cover high-altitude trekking, emergency medical evacuation (including helicopter rescue), accidents, and trip cancellations. Because of the remoteness and altitude of this trek, medical help may not be immediately accessible, so insurance provides important protection.

Most foreign visitors need a tourist visa to enter Nepal, which can be obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at border crossings. Visas can also be applied for in advance through Nepalese embassies or consulates. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your entry date.

You will need several permits: the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit (GCAP) for the Rolwaling Valley, the Sagarmatha National Park Permit for the Khumbu region, a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for the Rolwaling Valley, the Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit, and a climbing permit from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) for Pachermo Peak. These permits are mandatory and usually arranged by your trekking agency.

Yes, hiring a licensed local guide is mandatory, especially because parts of the trek enter restricted areas and include technical mountaineering sections like Tashi Lapcha Pass and Pachermo Peak climb. Guides ensure your safety, help with permits, arrange logistics, provide cultural insights, and assist during emergencies.

You’ll need layered clothing including moisture-wicking base layers, insulating fleece and down jackets, waterproof outer shells, sturdy trekking boots, crampons, ice axe, helmet, harness, and a sleeping bag rated for -15°C or colder. Trekking poles, a daypack, water purification methods, and personal items like a headlamp and first aid kit are also important. Your trekking agency usually provides climbing ropes and some technical equipment.

Yes, climbing gear such as crampons, ice axes, harnesses, helmets, and ropes are available for rent in Kathmandu. However, it is advisable to bring your own equipment if possible for better fit and comfort. Your trekking agency can help coordinate gear rental as part of the trek package.

Mobile coverage is limited and only available near larger villages like Beding and Namche Bazaar. Internet and Wi-Fi are rarely available in remote areas and usually come at an extra cost. It’s best to prepare for minimal connectivity and inform family and friends accordingly.

Common symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, and trouble sleeping. These usually appear above 3,000 meters and can worsen if you ascend too quickly. Mild symptoms are common at places like Beding and Na Gaon.

Ascend slowly and include acclimatization days, especially at Na Gaon. Stay well-hydrated and eat high-carbohydrate meals. Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine. If symptoms worsen, stop ascending and rest. Diamox medication can help prevent symptoms but should be used only under medical supervision.

Carry energy-dense snacks such as energy bars, nuts, dried fruits, and chocolates. Bring reusable water bottles and use water purification tablets or filters to ensure safe drinking water. Avoid drinking untreated water from streams or taps.

Tap water and natural water sources are not safe to drink untreated. Always drink boiled, filtered, or chemically treated water to avoid waterborne illnesses. Many lodges sell boiled or filtered water at a reasonable price.

You should be physically fit and able to walk 5–8 hours a day on uneven, steep, and rocky terrain. Cardiovascular fitness, stamina, and strength are important. Training through hiking, running, or cardio exercises several weeks before the trek is highly recommended.

Medical facilities are basic and limited to first aid posts in some villages. For serious medical emergencies or severe altitude sickness, evacuation to Kathmandu or Lukla is necessary, often by helicopter. Always carry a basic first aid kit and inform your guide immediately if you feel unwell.

Respect local traditions by dressing modestly and asking permission before photographing people or religious sites. Greet locals politely and avoid loud behavior. Learn a few basic Nepali or local greetings to connect better with communities.

Prepare physically with endurance training, pack layered and technical clothing, and bring all necessary gear. Listen to your guide, pace yourself, and prioritize acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness. Carry sufficient cash for expenses and tips. Be open to local culture and enjoy the unique Himalayan experience with patience and respect.
