The trek from Jhuphal to Dunai takes about 3-4 hours of walking. Today's trail descends gradually through terraced fields and traditional villages, following the Thuli Bheri River. You will pass through the remote villages and terraced farmland, passing through scenic landscapes with views of rolling hills and deep valleys.

Dunai is the main town and administrative center of Dolpa district, offering lodges, guesthouses, small shops, and basic medical facilities. Stay overnight at lodge.

Today after having breakfast in the morning, prepare to trek towards Chekpa which takes about 6-7 hours of walking.

The trail to Chekpa begings with climbing through forested hills, passing small villages, terraced fields, and river valleys. Following the Phoksundo Khola River you will walk on mixed terrain of dirt trails and rocky sections. Along the way, you will pass through small villages, cross suspension bridges, and might even spot some wildlife, such as monkeys or mountain goats.

Today, we begin our trek from Chekpa to Ringmo which takes about 7 hours. The trail mostly ascends, winding through dense forests filled with pine and rhododendron trees. We cross several rivers and streams on wooden bridges, with the sound of flowing water accompanying us along the way. As we climb higher, the air feels fresher, and the scenery becomes more dramatic, with rocky cliffs and deep valleys. The trek can be tough at times due to the continuous uphill sections, but the breathtaking views and peaceful surroundings make it worthwhile. After hours of steady hiking, we finally reach Ringmo, a beautiful Tibetan-style village near the stunning Phoksundo Lake. We settle in for the night, ready to explore the lake the next day. Overnight at lodge.

The highlight of the area is the stunning Phoksundo Lake, Nepal’s deepest lake, with its mesmerizing turquoise-blue waters. We can take short hikes around the lake, visit the ancient Bonpo monastery nearby, and learn about the unique Bon Buddhist culture practiced in the region. The peaceful environment, with prayer flags fluttering and the lake reflecting the surrounding mountains, makes it a perfect place to unwind and acclimatize before continuing the trek.

Best Time For Upper Dolpo Treks in Nepal

The best time to trek Upper Dolpo Trekking is during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). These seasons offer clear skies, pleasant weather, and excellent visibility of the unique desert landscapes and Himalayan peaks.

  • Spring (March – May): Spring is one of the best times to trek in Upper Dolpo. The weather is generally stable with warmer days and clear skies. The trails are dry and easier to navigate, and the region's rugged beauty comes alive with blooming wildflowers across the high meadows. This season also provides opportunities to witness Tibetan Buddhist festivals in remote villages, enriching the cultural experience of the trek.
  • Autumn (September to November): Autumn is considered the peak trekking season in Upper Dolpo. After the monsoon, the skies are crystal clear, offering spectacular views of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and high passes. The temperature is mild during the day and chilly at night, and the dry weather makes for ideal trekking conditions. The region's isolated monasteries and traditional villages are especially atmospheric during this serene and photogenic season.
  • Monsoon/Summer (June to August): Although Upper Dolpo lies in a rain-shadow area, similar to Mustang, it remains relatively dry during the summer monsoon. This makes it one of the few Himalayan treks possible during these months. However, warmer temperatures can make lower sections of the trail dusty and hot. On the bright side, this is also when the high passes are snow-free and the lush green alpine meadows are at their most vibrant.

The Upper Dolpo trek is a remote and challenging journey, offering a mix of basic lodges in some villages and tented camping in more isolated areas where lodging facilities are unavailable.

  • Lodges & Camping: Some lower and mid-route villages like Dunai, Tarakot, and Ringmo (near Phoksundo Lake) have simple lodges or homestays offering basic rooms with limited facilities. However, as you move deeper into Upper Dolpo, especially beyond Phoksundo and towards Shey Gompa, Saldang, or Chharka, organized camping becomes essential due to the absence of lodges. Trekkers must be self-sufficient with tents, food supplies, and kitchen staff in these remote sections.
  • Meals: In lodges and homestays, meals are typically traditional Nepali fare such as dal bhat (lentils, rice, and vegetables), along with simple Tibetan-influenced dishes like tsampa, thukpa, and momos. During camping days, meals are prepared by a trekking cook and usually include nutritious and warm options like soup, rice, pasta, curries, and tea. Given the remoteness of Upper Dolpo, food variety is limited but hygienic, filling, and well-suited to sustain high-altitude trekking.

Because Upper Dolpo is a sparsely inhabited and isolated region, accommodation and meals are basic but genuine, requiring a fully supported camping setup in higher and less accessible areas.

Difficulty Level of Upper Dolpo Trekking in Nepal

Upper Dolpo Trek is graded as a Challenging high-altitude trek, best suited for experienced trekkers with excellent physical fitness, mental resilience, and a spirit of adventure. This remote and rugged trail ventures into one of Nepal’s most isolated and least-developed regions, featuring high passes, deep valleys, and culturally rich Tibetan Buddhist villages.

Key points to consider for upper dolpo treks:

  • Fitness: Be ready to trek 6 to 9 hours a day over steep ascents and descents, rocky terrain, river crossings, and long wilderness stretches without settlements. The remoteness demands strong endurance and stamina.
  • Altitude: The trek crosses multiple high passes above 5,000 meters, such as Kang La (5,350 m), Sela La (5,094 m), and Jyanta La (5,220 m). Proper acclimatization is essential, and altitude sickness is a real concern that must be managed with caution.
  • Trail Conditions: The trails are remote, rugged, and often unmarked. Expect loose rocks, scree slopes, narrow ridges, and snow-covered sections, especially early in the season. Some trails go days without any villages or facilities, requiring full logistical support.
  • Weather: Weather conditions can change quickly in high altitudes. While summer is the most favorable time due to dry conditions (thanks to the rain-shadow effect), mornings and nights can still be very cold. Snowfall is common in spring and autumn on high passes.
  • Experience: Prior high-altitude trekking and camping experience is highly recommended. This trek is not suitable for beginners. A guided trek with support staff (guides, porters, and cook) is essential for safety, navigation, and comfort.

Overall, Upper Dolpo Trek is an unforgettable expedition into Nepal’s wild frontier. It’s perfect for seasoned trekkers seeking a raw, off-the-grid Himalayan adventure infused with ancient Tibetan culture and unmatched natural beauty.

Upper Dolpo Trek- 25 Days FAQs

Upper Dolpo is a remote Himalayan region in western Nepal, bordering Tibet (China). It is known for its rugged mountains, Tibetan Buddhist culture, ancient monasteries, and pristine natural beauty. The area lies in the Karnali Province and is one of Nepal’s least accessible and least-developed trekking regions.

Most trekkers fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (a western lowland city), then take a short mountain flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal airstrip (2,440 m). From Juphal, the trek begins toward Dunai and deeper into Upper Dolpo. Due to limited flights, weather conditions can affect schedules, so flexibility is important.

The ideal trekking seasons are spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) when the weather is stable, days are warm, and skies are clear. Also, another popular season for Upper Dolpo Trek in Nepal is on Summer (monsoon) is possible but warmer and dusty.

Upper Dolpo is a restricted area, so you need special permits:

  • Dolpo Restricted Area Permit issued by the Nepal government.
  • Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit

These permits must be arranged by Asian Adventure Treks & Expedition!

Due to the complexity of permits, remoteness, need for camping, and logistics, independent trekking is not recommended. You will need at least 2 person to do Upper Dolpo trek, and you must be accompained by licensed trekking guide from licensed trekking agency in Nepal. Hiring experienced guides, porters, and cooks is highly advised for safety and convenience.

Prepare for a remote experience without regular communication. We will send satellite phone with trekking guide for emergency and contact.

Yes, altitude sickness is definitely a concern on the Upper Dolpo trek. Since the route crosses several high mountain passes above 5,000 meters—there is a significant risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) if proper precautions aren’t taken.

To minimize the risk:

  • Acclimatize slowly by ascending gradually and including rest days at key points.
  • Stay well-hydrated and avoid alcohol or heavy exertion at high altitudes.
  • Be aware of symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
