Big News for Trekkers! Nepal Changes Rules for Trekking in Restricted Areas

Nepal has officially updated its trekking rules for restricted areas in March 22, 2026! The new policies now allow solo trekkers to get permits, introduce a mandatory 1-to-7 guide ratio, and move the entire agency application process online. Read our simple breakdown of what these changes mean for your next Himalayan adventure.

If you're planning to trek in some of Nepal's most beautiful and remote areas, there's an important update you need to know about. The Department of Immigration Nepal has just announced some key changes to how foreign travelers can get permission to visit restricted areas in Nepal.

Don't worry — we've broken it all down for you in simple terms!

What Are "Restricted Areas" in Nepal?

Nepal has 13 special districts that are classified as restricted or protected areas. These are some of the most stunning, off-the-beaten-path destinations in the country — think remote Himalayan valleys, border regions, and culturally sensitive zones.

To visit these places, foreign nationals need a special permit from the Department of Immigration. That's not new. But how you get that permit? That's what just changed!

So, What's Changed? Here's What You Need to Know 👇

1. Agency Can Now Apply Online — And It's Much Easier!
The old process was complicated and time-consuming. The good news is that the entire permit application process is now available online. It's faster, simpler, and much more traveler-friendly. No more running around offices or waiting in long queues!

2. Solo Trekkers Can Now Get a Permit!
This is probably the biggest change and great news for solo travelers!

Previously, solo trekkers could NOT get a permit for restricted areas. They were forced to find a trekking partner just to qualify — which was frustrating and inconvenient.

That rule is now gone!

As of March 22, 2026, solo trekkers can apply for and receive a single-trip permit. They no longer need to team up with someone just to get permission!

3. A Licensed Trekking Guide is Mandatory
All trekkers in restricted areas must hire a licensed trekking guide and book through travel agency. This is compulsory, no exceptions.

This rule is in place for your own safety and to support local employment in the tourism sector.

4. One Guide for Maximum 7 Trekkers
To ensure your safety and proper supervision on the trail, the government has set a group size limit:

One trekking guide can accompany a maximum of 7 tourists.

So if your group is larger than 7, you'll need additional guides. This ensures everyone gets proper attention and care throughout the trek.

5. Emergency Rescue Insurance is Required
Safety first! You are now required to have full emergency rescue (rescue) insurance before heading into restricted areas. This covers you in case of any unexpected situation during your trek — which, in remote mountain areas, is always a smart idea anyway!

6. Apply Using Your Visa Submission ID
The application system has also been updated. You can now apply for your trekking permit using your Nepal visa application number (Submission ID) directly through Nepal's Smart Visa system. This makes the whole process smoother and more connected.
