Mera Peak (6461 m) & Amphu Lapcha Pass (5845 m) : The Ultimate High-Altitude Himalayan Adventure

Climbing Mera Peak & Amphu Lapcha Pass Expedition is one of the spectacular high-altitude adventure that combines trekking, peak climbing, and technical pass crossing. This challenging expedition takes you through the remote Hongu and Hinku Valleys, summiting Mera Peak (6461m)—the highest trekking peak in Nepal before approaching the Amphu Lapcha Pass (5845m), one of the most demanding passes in the Himalayas.

The adventure begins with a scenic flight to Lukla and heads into the quiet and beautiful Hinku Valley, far from the crowded Everest Trekking trails. You trek through lush forests, suspension bridges, yak pastures, and traditional Sherpa villages like Khote and Tangnag. The trail slowly climbs higher, giving you time to acclimatize as you head toward Mera Base Camp, which sits just below the snowy peak of Mera.

Information about: Mera Peak – Nepal’s Highest Trekking Peak (6461 m)

Mera Peak is the highest of all designated trekking peaks in Nepal. Though the climb is non-technical, it involves walking on glaciers using crampons, ice axes, and ropes. It’s a demanding ascent mainly due to its high altitude, but it's achievable for fit trekkers with basic mountaineering training.

From the summit of Mera Peak, you are rewarded with one of the most stunning mountain panoramas anywhere on Earth. You can see below five of the world’s tallest peaks from the summit:

  • Mount Everest (8848 m)
  • Lhotse (8516 m)
  • Makalu (8485 m)
  • Cho Oyu (8188 m)
  • Kangchenjunga (8586 m)

alongside dozens of other Himalayan giants. The sense of peace, accomplishment, and raw beauty from the summit is unforgettable.

Crossing the Remote Hongu Valley

After summiting Mera, the journey continues into the Hongu Valley, one of the most remote and untouched parts of the Himalayas. This area is wild, vast, and rarely visited. You’ll walk alongside glacial rivers, across moraines, and past turquoise alpine lakes under the shadows of massive mountains like Baruntse, Chamlang, and Makalu.

Camping in this isolated valley surrounded by snow and silence offers a rare connection with nature and the mountains. It feels like a true expedition, far removed from modern distractions.

Amphu Lapcha Pass (5,845 m) – Technical and Thrilling

The Amphu Lapcha Pass is a high, icy mountain pass that connects the Hongu Valley to the famous Imja Valley near Island Peak and Chhukung. This is one of the most technical and demanding passes in Nepal. It requires the use of:

  • Ropes for ascending and descending
  • Crampons
  • Ice axes
  • Helmet and harness
  • Guided support for fixed ropes on steep icy sections

Crossing this pass involves a thrilling climb to the top, followed by a steep, rope-assisted descent down an ice wall into the Imja Valley. It’s an exciting challenge for those ready to push their limits.

Throughout the journey, you are surrounded by breathtaking Himalayan landscapes from dense rhododendron forests and yak grazing meadows to towering glaciers and vertical ice walls. The contrast between the wild remoteness of Hinku and Hongu Valleys and the famous mountain views of the Everest region makes this trek incredibly unique.

Once you cross the pass, you descend into the Khumbu region, where the trail ends in Chhukung, near Island Peak, Ama Dablam, and Nuptse. From here, you can either trek down to Lukla or continue to Everest Base Camp if time and energy allow.

Besides the mountains and physical challenge, this expedition offers moments of Sherpa cultural immersion, especially in the early days of the trek. You pass Buddhist monasteries, prayer wheels, and fluttering mani walls, sharing smiles and stories with local people living in harmony with nature.

This trek is ideal for experienced trekkers with prior high-altitude trekking experience, people with basic mountaineering skills or a willingness to learn rope techniques, those seeking a true expedition feel, far from tourist trails and anyone ready for a physical and mental challenge in exchange for once-in-a-lifetime rewards

Due to the altitude, remote setting, and technical nature of the pass, this is not for beginners. You’ll need good fitness, acclimatization, and professional guidance.

The Mera Peak and Amphu Lapcha Pass expedition is more than just a trek, it's a journey through the heart of the high Himalayas, where adventure, solitude, culture, and challenge come together. It’s a trail for those who want something rare, raw, and real, a trail where few footsteps go, but where the rewards are beyond imagination.

In the early morning after having breakfast, you will meet our guide at pre informed time to airport and drive to the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) for a 35-minute scenic and adventurous flight to Lukla in the Everest region, weather permitting. Upon landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2840 m) - rest briefly, meet your Sherpas/Helpers at the lodge, and begin the trek to Chutanga.

Today is the first day of the Mera Peak Climbing. At the beginning prepare to gradually start the trek towards Chutanga from Lukla, walking through slightly ascending trial along the lush rhododendron forests. The walk takes about 4 hours from Lukla, passing through beautiful landscapes and traditional Sherpa settlements. Arriving in Chutanga, settle in for the night preparing for the journey ahead. Stay overnight at lodge.

This day after having breakfast you will trek towards Chetrabu which takes about 5-6 hours.

On this day, the trek ascends from Chutanga to Chetrabu, covering steep alpine terrain with gradual altitude gain. The trail passes through lush forests, rocky ridges, and meadows, offering stunning views of the Dudh Koshi Valley. This section helps in acclimatization before reaching higher elevations. The trek is challenging yet rewarding, preparing trekkers for the upcoming high-altitude sections. Stay overnight at lodge.

This day after having breakfast you will head towards Kothe which takes about 6-7 hours (approx. 8 km).

On this day, the trek descends from Chetrabu to Kothe, passing through dense rhododendron and pine forests while following the Hinku Valley. The trail offers stunning views of Mera Peak and surrounding mountains, with occasional glimpses of yaks grazing in high-altitude pastures. As you descend, the landscape transitions from alpine ridges to lush green valleys, making for a scenic and refreshing trek. Stay overnight at lodge.

This day you will have breakfast in the morning and get ready to continue the journey towards Tangnang which takes about 4-5 hours of walking.

Leaving Kothe, you follow the beautiful Hinku Valley, trekking along the banks of the Hinku River with stunning views of Mera Peak and surrounding snow-capped mountains. The trail gradually ascends, passing through alpine meadows and yak pastures. On the way to Tangnang you can also visit one of the oldest Buddhist Do Drul Monastery.

As you get closer to Tangnag we start to notice the landscape becoming more rugged and glacial. Tangnag is a small settlement used by climbers for acclimatization, offering breathtaking views of Charpate Himal and Mera Peak’s massive south face and west face. Tangnag is a small grazing settlement nestled beneath the towering Mera Glacier, an important acclimatization stop on the way to Mera Peak. Stay overnight at lodge.

Today is a crucial rest and acclimatization day in Tangnag, allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude before continuing towards Mera Peak.

To aid acclimatization, you can take a short hike to higher elevations, such as Kusum Kanguru (5000 m), from where we can see crystal clear view of Mera Peak. Today’s hike will take around ¾ hours. Stay overnight at lodge.

After a good rest in Tangnag, continue the ascent towards Khare (5045m), the last major settlement before Mera Peak Base Camp which takes about 4-5 hours of walking. The trail follows the Hinku Glacier, gradually climbing through rocky and glacial terrain alongside Dig Glacier. On the way you can see breathtaking views of Charpate Himal and surrounding peaks. As you gain altitude, the vegetation thins, revealing a rugged alpine landscape with breathtaking views of Mera Peak’s north face. Also, you can see beautiful views of Kyasar Kang (6770 m).

Today’s trek will take around 4-5 hours through zig zag and uphill trial which becomes steeper as we approach Khare. Stay overnight at lodge.

This is a rest and acclimatization day in Khare to allow the body to adjust to the high altitude before the ascent of Mera Peak. Trekkers can use this day for short hikes to higher elevations for better acclimatization, practicing basic mountaineering skills (use of crampons, ice axe, and ropes), and enjoying the breathtaking glacier and mountain views. Stay overnight at lodge.

This day after having breakfast prepare to continue the journey towards High camp for stepping into the true alpine world of Mera Peak. Today’s trek will be around 5-6 hours walking over snow-covered rocky terrain upto we reach High Camp (5780 m), a spectacular vantage point perched above the clouds.

As you gain altitude, the air gets thinner, and the climb becomes more demanding, but we will be welcomed by breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu which keep us motivated. On the way you will cross through Mera La Pass (5415 m) through the rocky, glaciated ride towards High Camp.

Upon arrival in high camp, settle into your tents, rest, and prepare for the final push to the summit. The night is spent under a dazzling sky filled with stars, with the excitement of summiting Mera Peak just ahead. This is a demanding day due to the high altitude and technical terrain, so proper acclimatization and caution are essential. Stay overnight at tented camp.

Today is the most anticipated and challenging day of the Mera Peak Expedition—the summit push to Mera Peak (6461m). Today you will start in the early hours, usually around 2-3 AM, using headlamps to navigate the icy slopes under the starlit sky for climbing. The climb is steady but demanding, requiring the use of crampons, ropes, and ice axes as we ascend the snow-covered terrain. The final part to climb Mera Peak involves a short, steep climb using fixed ropes before reaching the summit.

After 5-6 hours of climbing, you will reach the summit of Mera Peak, where you willl be rewarded with an unparalleled 360-degree panoramic views of the world’s highest peaks—Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse, Mount Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Kanchenjunga and so on. Standing on the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment, making all the effort worthwhile.

After celebrating and capturing breathtaking photos, you begin your descent back to Kongma Dingma. Stay overnight at tented camp.

Today's trek continues through the remote and rugged Upper Hinku Valley, gradually ascending towards Seto Pokhari (5035m), also known as the White Lake.

The route from Kongma Dingma to Seto Pokhari (White Lake) takes you deeper into the remote and untamed Upper Hinku Valley, one of the most secluded regions in the Himalayas. While there isn’t a significant change in elevation, the trail winds through uneven terrain, including glacial debris, rocky slopes, and stark alpine landscapes.

Seto Pokhari, among the highest freshwater lakes in the area, sits in a dramatic setting beneath towering peaks such as Chamlang (7,319 m) and Baruntse (7,129 m). This peaceful and otherworldly location is a common campsite for trekkers preparing to cross Amphu Lapcha Pass or venture into the Barun Valley. Stay overnight at tented camp.

Today you will trek towards Amphu Lapcha Base Camp (South side) whcih takes about 4-5 hours of walking.

Today you will walk through a rugged and remote high-altitude landscape along the glacial moraines, loose scree and icy sections which makes today's trek physically challenging. Trekkers walk beneath towering peaks and alongside icy ridgelines in the Hongu Valley, with increasing exposure to high-altitude winds and cold. The area is completely wild and uninhabited, requiring full expedition-style support (tents, food, crew).

The South Base Camp is located just below the Amphu Lapcha Pass (5845 m), where trekkers prepare for an early morning pass crossing into the Imja Valley. Stay overnight at tented camp.

Today the day starts early from the southern base of Amphu Lapcha, with a challenging and technical ascent to the Amphu Lapcha Pass (5845 m). With the help of technical guide you will use crampons, harnesses, and fixed ropes, as you walk along steepy icy slopes, rocky ridges, and snow-covered terrain, depending on the season. The climb is demanding and usually requires support from experienced guides or climbing staff.

Upon reaching the top of the Amphu Lapcha Pass (5845 m), celebrate the success. After the pass, he route descends sharply into the Imja Valley, passing through glacial sections, loose scree, and technical descents that often involve rope assistance.

Today depending on the situation you will choose to camp at Chhukung Base Camp (5100 m) for a well-deserved rest or continue further down to Chhukung village (4730 m), a popular stop with teahouses and basic facilities. Chhukung also serves as a launching point for expeditions to Island Peak (Imja Tse) and other high-altitude adventures in the region. Stay overnigt at lodge.

The trek from Chhukung Valley Base Camp to Chhukung takes about 3 - 4 hours. The trail from the base camp to Chhukung is slightly zig-zag and straight, walking approx. another 3 and a half hour you will reach Pangboche. Stay overnight at Lodge.

You will start the day with beautiful views of Everest and Lhotse from Pangboche. After having breakfast you will trek for about 5 hours to reach Namche Bazzar. At the beginning, you have to descend for a while and then smooth trial until Debuche, again continuing ascend to Tengboche. You will have lunch and Tengboche and visit one of the famous and ancient Buddhist Monastery there. You’ll cross several suspension bridges over rushing mountain rivers and pass through small Sherpa villages like Phortse and Tyangboche (close to the famous Tengboche Monastery, which can be a slight detour).

After that, you will continue to climb until PhunkiTanga and then continue to Namche Bazar for about another 3 hours. Stay overnight at Lodge.

Today in the early morning (6 am onwards) you will take a flight from Tenzing Hillary Airport (an "eagle's nest") to fly to Kathmandu or Ramechhap (subject to availability). Altitude Sickness & Remedies on Mera Peak Climbing and Amphu Lapcha Pass

Altitude sickness, also called Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is a common concern during the Mera Peak Climbing and Amphu Lapcha Pass expedition because the trek reaches elevations above 5,000 meters. As you climb higher, oxygen levels decrease, and your body needs time to adjust. Knowing the symptoms and how to prevent or treat them is important for a safe and successful journey.

Common Symptoms of AMS:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness or extreme tiredness
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Shortness of breath

These symptoms often appear at higher altitudes, especially near Khare, Mera Base Camp, and while crossing Amphu Lapcha Pass.

What You Can Do:

Walk Slowly & Acclimatize Properly

  • Take your time and let your body adjust naturally.
  • Include acclimatization days (such as in Namche and Dingboche).

Stay Hydrated

  • Drink 3 to 4 liters of water every day.
  • Ginger tea, garlic soup, and herbal teas can help.
  • Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine.

Eat Properly

  • Even if you’re not hungry, eat regular meals.
  • Focus on carbohydrates for energy and recovery.

Keep Yourself Warm

  • Dress in layers and keep your body warm, especially your hands, feet, and head.
  • Sudden cold can weaken your body’s ability to adjust.

Pay Attention to Your Body

  • If you feel unwell, take a break and don’t climb higher.
  • Let your guide know immediately if your symptoms get worse.

Medicines & Natural Remedies:

  • Diamox (Acetazolamide): Helps prevent AMS, take 1–2 days before reaching higher altitudes (with a doctor’s advice).
  • Paracetamol or Ibuprofen: For mild headaches or body pain.
  • Ginger, garlic soup, and herbal teas: Natural remedies to help with circulation and digestion.
  • Oxygen: Sometimes available at lodges or for emergency use—but usually not needed if you acclimatize properly.

With proper pacing, good acclimatization, and expert care from Asian Adventure Treks & Expedition, you can enjoy a safe and rewarding Mera Peak and Amphu Lapcha Pass journey. Our experienced guides monitor your health regularly and are trained to respond quickly to any altitude-related issues.
