Lukla Flight Information

Flight from Ramechhap (March, April, May, October & November)
During the peak seasons of (Spring) March to May and October to November (Autumn), due to the high volume of tourists and maximum flights to Lukla, the Government of Nepal normally decides to operate flights from Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu to avoid air traffic. If flying from Ramechhap, we will have to wake up at 1 or 2 AM and take a 4 hour drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap in a private or shared vehicle. From Ramechhap, we will take a 20-minute flight to Lukla.

Flight from Kathmandu (December - September)
During the off-peak months from December to September (i.e Winter / Monsoon), due to fewer tourists, flights to Lukla operate directly from Kathmandu. We have to wake up at about 5 or 6 AM and then meet guide at the hotel and drive to TIA airport and take 35-minute flights to Lukla.

Everything You Need to Know About Chola Pass (5330 m)

Chola Pass is the bridge between Gokyo & Everest Base Camp. This pass is one of the challenging passes, widely known as the summit pass. Climbing the top of Chola pass almost feels like climbing the high rock mountain. With the altitude, cold and rocky climb, Chola Pass is challenging to many trekkers, but with the guidance from the Guide, you will be able to make it to the top. From the top of Chola Pass, if weather permits, we can see most amazing panoramic views of Mount Amadablam, Cholatse, Mount Pumori, Lobuche and so on.. As we reach top of Chola Pass and start to descend, we leave the amazing Gokyo valley and head towards our most awaited destination – Everest Base Camp.

Who can do Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek with Gokyo & Chola Pass in Nepal?

The Everest Base Camp trek can be done by anyone who enjoys walking, is in decent shape, and loves adventure. However, here’s a more detailed breakdown below:

  1. Beginners with Good Fitness & Determination: You don’t need to be super fit or have done big treks before. If you're healthy, can walk for 5–7 hours a day, and are mentally ready to handle some altitude and basic discomfort, you're good to go. It helps if you’ve done regular walks or small hikes before, but even if not—you can still make it with the right attitude.
  2. Moderately Experienced Trekkers: If you’ve already done a few hikes or treks before, this is a great challenge to level up. It’s not technical, but it does test your endurance and mental strength, especially as you climb higher. You'll enjoy the journey even more with your past trekking experience.
  3. Solo Trekkers, Couples, Small & Large Groups: This route is safe and well-traveled, with plenty of tea houses and friendly faces along the way. Whether you’re going solo, with your partner, friends, or even a big group—this trek offers an unforgettable experience. The shared vibe on the trail adds to the fun, especially if it's your first time in the Himalayas.
  4. With the Right Guidance & Support: As long as you go with a reliable trekking agency, with proper guidance - take enough time to acclimatize, and don’t rush—it’s totally doable. No need for prior mountaineering experience. Just bring your excitement, a bit of training, and a love for nature.

If reaching Everest Base Camp has been on your bucket list, and you're ready to take on an unforgettable challenge, this trek is 100% possible for you.

Alternatives for Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo – Chola Pass Trek

If you’re short on time but still want the classic Everest experience, there are a few shorter and more direct versions of the EBC trek. One of the most popular is the standard Everest Base Camp Trek, which skips the Gokyo Lakes and Chola Pass section, making the journey shorter and more straightforward. This version can typically be done in 10 to 12 days of trek from Lukla to Lukla.

Another option is the Everest View Trek, ideal for those who want to experience the Khumbu region without going all the way to Base Camp. This trek takes you up to Tengboche or Everest View Hotel, offering amazing views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and more—within 5 to 7 days.

You can also choose a fly-in, fly-out Everest helicopter trek—hike up part of the way (like to Namche or Dingboche), then take a helicopter ride to EBC or back from there to save time and energy. This is perfect for travelers on a tight schedule who still want that unforgettable Everest moment. Some alternatives for Everest Trekking:

  • Everest Base Camp Trek & Return by Heli – 12 Days
  • Everest Renjola Pass to Gokyo Trek – 13 Days
  • Everest Base Camp Trek – 15 Days
  • Everest Three Passes Trek – 19 Days
  • Everest Trek from Jiri – Gokyo – 22 Days

All of these options can be customized based on your fitness level, interest, and available time, making sure you still get a taste of the Everest magic without the longer and more challenging Gokyo-Chola route.

On the Everest Base Camp trek with Gokyo & Chola Pass, you’ll sleep as high as Gorakshep (5140 m) and reach Kala Patthar (5,545 m), so the risk is higher than on routes that top out below 4,000 m, but if we acclimatize well and walk properly, eat properly everything will be all right .

Some Common Symptoms

  • Headache
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Dizziness or fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty sleeping

Most trekkers feel the effects (if any) around Gokyo (4790 m) or Chola Pass (5330 m) or highest sleeping point of the trek, Gorakshep (5140 m), Everest Base Camp (5360 m), Kalapathhar (5545 m) as oxygen levels drop significantly beyond these points.

In case such symptoms occur; we can adopt following measures:

1. Ascend Gradually

  • Even on a short Langtang Valley Trek, follow a well-paced itinerary with proper acclimatization - Avoid rushing from lower altitudes straight to higher elevataions.

2. Hydrate Often

  • Drink at least 3–4 litres of water daily to stay hydrated.

  • Avoid alcohol and too much caffeine at high altitudes.

  • Have carb-rich meals for energy.
  • Don’t skip meals even if you lose your appetite.

4. Stay Warm

  • Cold can increase fatigue and suppress appetite — dress in layers and protect your chest, head, and feet.

5. Listen to Your Body

  • If you feel symptoms, rest, don’t ascend further, and inform your guide or group.
  • Do not sleep at a higher altitude if symptoms persist.

A. Medications for altitude sickness:

  • Diamox (Acetazolamide): Prevents and reduces symptoms. Start 1–2 days before reaching high altitude (consult your doctor first).
  • Ibuprofen or Paracetamol: For headache relief.
  • Ginger, garlic soup, and local herbal teas: Natural aids used by local guides and teahouses.
