Everest Three Pass Trek: Ultimate High-Altitude Adventure in the Khumbu

Everest Three Passes Trek in Nepal is a great challenging adventure for trekkers who want to explore remote trails, see beautiful mountain views, and experience Sherpa culture. Along the way, you’ll visit monasteries, quiet villages, and busy markets. Because of the high altitude and tough mountain passes, you need to be physically fit, well-prepared, and allow time for acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness.

The trek starts with a scenic flight to Lukla, then heads to Namche Bazaar, a lively Sherpa town. From there, you trek to Thame and then cross the first high pass, Renjo La (5340 m), which offers amazing views of Everest and other peaks. After the pass, the trail leads down to the beautiful Gokyo Valley, where you can see the Gokyo Lakes.

Next, you cross Cho La Pass (5330 m), which includes walking over a glacier. This route connects to the famous Everest Base Camp trail. After visiting Everest Base Camp and climbing up to Kala Patthar for incredible mountain views, you face the final and highest challenge, Kongma La Pass (5535 m). From there, the trail descends through Chhukung, Tengboche, and Namche Bazaar, and finally returns to Lukla.

The Everest Three Passes Trek is best for experienced and physically fit trekkers who want a tough and exciting adventure in the Himalayas. Since it crosses three high passes — Renjo La (5,360 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Kongma La (5,535 m) — it needs good acclimatization, strong stamina, and proper preparation. This trek is perfect for those who’ve done high-altitude hikes before and want to explore remote trails, changing landscapes, and stunning mountain views.

Lukla Flight Information

Flight from Ramechhap (March, April, May, October & November)

During the peak seasons of (Spring) March to May and October to November (Autumn), due to the high volume of tourists and maximum flights to Lukla, the Government of Nepal normally decides to operate flights from Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu to avoid air traffic. If flying from Ramechhap, we will have to wake up at 1 or 2 AM and take a 5–6-hour drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap in a private or shared vehicle. From Ramechhap, we will take a 20-minute flight to Lukla.

Flight from Kathmandu (December - September)

During the off-peak months from December to September (i.e Winter / Monsoon), due to fewer tourists, flights to Lukla operate directly from Kathmandu. We have to wake up at about 5 or 6 AM and then meet guide at the hotel and drive to TIA airport and take 35-minute flights to Lukla.

The trails are colourful with blooming rhododendrons, and visibility is excellent for mountain views.

Autumn (September - November):
Autumn is the most popular season for the EBC trek due to its clear skies, dry weather, and ideal temperatures. Daytime temperatures range between 10°C and 20°C at lower altitudes, while nighttime temperatures at higher altitudes can fall to -10°C or lower. This season offers crisp mountain views, less rainfall, and comfortable trekking conditions, making it peak trekking time.

Winter (December - February):
Winter brings cold and harsher conditions, especially at higher elevations. Daytime temperatures may reach 5°C to 10°C, but can drop to -15°C to -20°C at night above 4,000 meters. Though skies remain generally clear and crowds are minimal, heavy snow can occasionally block trails and lodges at higher altitudes. Proper cold-weather gear and flexibility are essential for trekking in winter.

Difficulty Level of EBC Three Pass Trek

The Everest Three Passes Trek is considered one of the most challenging treks, graded HARD in Nepal. It is a high-altitude, long-distance trek that crosses three major mountain passes — Renjo La (5360 m), Cho La (5330 m), and Kongma La (5535 m).

Here’s what makes it Hard (3/4) graded:

High Altitude:

You’ll spend many days above 4,000 meters, and cross passes above 5,300 meters. Proper acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness.

Long Walking Hours:

You’ll be trekking for 6 to 8 hours a day on average, with some days even longer when crossing the passes.

Steep Climbs and Glacier Crossings:

Some sections, especially Cho La Pass, involve steep climbs, snow, or icy paths, and glacier crossings, which require good fitness and focus.

Weather Conditions:

Weather can change quickly in the mountains. Cold temperatures, strong winds, or snowfall can add to the difficulty — especially at higher altitudes.

This trek is best for experienced trekkers or physically fit adventure seekers who have done long hikes or high-altitude treks before. With the right preparation, gear, and support from experienced guides like those at Asian Adventure Treks & Expedition, it is a tough but incredibly rewarding journey.

Altitude Sickness & Remedies during Nepal Everest Trekking

Altitude Sickness (also called Acute Mountain Sickness / AMS) is a situation where body start to react due to low oxygen levels at high altitudes—usually above 3500 m. On the Everest Base Camp trek, you’ll sleep as high as Gorakshep (5140 m) and reach Kala Patthar (5,545 m), so the risk is higher than on routes that top out below 4000 meters, but if we acclimatize well and walk properly, eat properly everything will be all right .

Some Common Symptoms

  • Headache
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Dizziness or fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty sleeping

Most trekkers feel the effects (if any) around highest sleeping point of the trek, Gorakshep (5140 m), Everest Base Camp (5360 m), Kalapathhar (5545 m) as oxygen levels drop significantly beyond these points.

In case such symptoms occur; we can adopt following measures:

1. Ascend Gradually

  • Even on a short Langtang Valley Trek, follow a well-paced itinerary with proper acclimatization - Avoid rushing from lower altitudes straight to higher elevataions.

2. Hydrate Often

  • Drink at least 3–4 litres of water daily to stay hydrated.
  • Drink ginger or garlic soups, black tea, herbal tea more often
  • Avoid alcohol and too much caffeine at high altitudes.

3. Eat Well

  • Have carb-rich meals for energy.
  • Don’t skip meals even if you lose your appetite.

4. Stay Warm

  • Cold can increase fatigue and suppress appetite — dress in layers and protect your chest, head, and feet.

5. Listen to Your Body

  • If you feel symptoms, rest, don’t ascend further, and inform your guide or group.
  • Do not sleep at a higher altitude if symptoms persist.

A. Medications for altitude sickness:

  • Diamox (Acetazolamide): Prevents and reduces symptoms. Start 1–2 days before reaching high altitude (consult your doctor first).
  • Ibuprofen or Paracetamol: For headache relief.
  • Ginger, garlic soup, and local herbal teas: Natural aids used by local guides and teahouses.
  • Oxygen: Some lodges or rescue teams carry bottled oxygen if needed (rarely used unless in emergencies).

B. Emergency Support

  • Travel insurance that covers high-altitude helicopter rescue is essential.
