Flight from Ramechhap (March, April, May, October & November)

During the peak seasons of (Spring) March to May and October to November (Autumn), due to the high volume of tourists and maximum flights to Lukla, the Government of Nepal normally decides to operate flights from Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu to avoid air traffic. If flying from Ramechhap, we will have to wake up at 1 or 2 AM and take a 5–6-hour drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap in a private or shared vehicle. From Ramechhap, we will take a 20-minute flight to Lukla.

Flight from Kathmandu (December - September)

During the off-peak months from December to September (i.e Winter / Monsoon), due to fewer tourists, flights to Lukla operate directly from Kathmandu. We have to wake up at about 5 or 6 AM and then meet guide at the hotel and drive to TIA airport and take 35-minute flights to Lukla.

Drinking untreated water directly from taps, streams, or rivers is not safe during the Gokyo Lake Trek. To stay healthy, it's recommended to use purified bottled water, or treat tap water with water purification tablets, UV sterilizers (like Steripen), or portable water filters. Many teahouses also offer boiled drinking water for a small fee. Staying properly hydrated is essential at high altitudes, so ensure your water is always safe to drink.

You are advised to carry Nepali Rupees (NPR) during the Gokyo Lake Trek. Foreign currencies are not accepted in teahouses or shops along the trail. It’s best to withdraw or exchange enough cash in Kathmandu before flying to Lukla, as ATMs are only available in Namche Bazaar, and they may not always be reliable or functional.

During Gokyo Lake Trek, you may witness various Buddhist customs and rituals practiced by the local Sherpa community. These include spinning prayer wheels, walking clockwise around mani walls (stone structures carved with sacred mantras), and visiting monasteries and chortens (stupas) along the trail. You might also hear the sound of monks chanting prayers, especially in places like Namche Bazaar or Thame. In the Gokyo region, the lakes are considered sacred, and pilgrims often visit them during Janai Purnima, a full moon festival in August.

Respecting local traditions—such as removing your shoes before entering a monastery—is appreciated by the local people.

Accommodation along the Gokyo Lake Trek is primarily in teahouses and lodges. These are basic but comfortable, offering simple rooms with twin beds or mats on the floor. Facilities typically include shared or attached toilets, cold showers (hot showers are available with extra charges), and common dining areas. Most lodges provide meals, tea, and charging facilities for electronic devices at an extra cost. At higher elevations like Gokyo and beyond, amenities become more limited, so it’s best to be prepared for simple living conditions.

During Gokyo Lake Trekking in Everst, you’ll find a variety of simple meals served at teahouses and lodges. The staple is dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry), which is filling and perfect for trekking. Other common options include noodles, fried rice, momos (dumplings), pasta, pancakes, soups, Tibetan bread, and potatoes prepared in different styles. Breakfast typically includes items like porridge, toast, eggs, and tea or coffee.
Vegetarian meals are widely available, and some places can accommodate vegan or gluten-free diets upon request.

While meat may be on the menu, it’s best avoided at higher altitudes since it’s often carried up without refrigeration. Always stick to fresh-cooked, hot meals and boiled or purified water for safety.

Yes, vegetarian meals like dal bhatnoodlespasta, and vegetable curries are widely available. Vegan and gluten-free meals can be arranged with prior notice—just inform your guide or lodge staff in advance.

During Gokyo Lake Trek, you’ll typically hike 10 to 12 kilometers (6 to 9 miles) per day, depending on the section of the trail. This usually takes around 5 to 7 hours of walking daily, with some shorter days for acclimatization and rest. The longest and most strenuous day is usually the hike to Gokyo Ri (5360 m), which can take 3 to 4 hours of round trip on top of your regular walking.

Gokyo Lake Trek is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and unique experiences. Highlights include trekking to the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, hike upto fifth lake of Gokyo - some of the highest freshwater lakes in the world; climbing Gokyo Ri (5360 m) for breathtaking panoramic views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu; visiting the vibrant Sherpa villages of Namche Bazaar, Khumjung village and Phortse Village; and exploring the serene and less crowded trails away from the busier Everest Base Camp route. The trek offers a perfect blend of spectacular mountain vistas, high-altitude lakes, rich culture, and adventure.
