This trail was used by legendary Everest mountaineers Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay during their Everest expedition nearly 60 years ago.
What sets this trek apart is the opportunity to explore the rich culture, diverse landscapes, and untouched nature of the lower Khumbu region, which most trekkers skip by flying from Kathmandu to Lukla. Starting from the vibrant trails of Jiri and passing through lovely villages like Deurali, Sete, Junbesi, Nunthala, and Paiya, the route gradually ascends toward Phakding where it joins the regular Everest Gokyo-Chola Pass trail.
Along the way, trekkers walk through beautiful rhododendron and pine forests and experience the unique culture of the Rai and Sherpa communities. The journey continues through Namche Bazaar, Dole, and Machhermo before reaching the stunning Gokyo Lakes (4790 m). From Gokyo, a hike to Gokyo Ri (5,360 m) offers breathtaking panoramic views of Everest and surrounding peaks.
Next, the trek crosses the challenging Cho La Pass (5330 m), leading to Gorakshep, the last teahouse settlement before reaching the Everest Base Camp (5,380 m). The adventure ends with a sunrise hike to Kala Patthar (5545 m), the highest point of the trek and one of the best viewpoints of Mount Everest.
