Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail: A New Trekking Route in Annapurna Region of Nepal

The Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail (GHTT) is a new trekking route in the Annapurna region of Nepal, officially explored in 2024 by the local Gurung community of Lamjung & Pokhara. One of the main people involved in discovering this trail was Mr. B.B. Suyal, CEO of Asian Adventure Treks & Expedition. After completing the trek himself, he said it was “one of the best treks I’ve ever experienced.”

This trek takes you through quiet mountain trails, beautiful villages, peaceful forests, and high ridges—far away from the crowds. It’s not just about walking through the mountains; it’s also a spiritual and cultural journey into the heart of Gurung life. You’ll visit special places like Karpu Danda, Tapro, Thurju, Dudh Pokhari, and Timang each with deep meaning for the Gurung people.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy amazing views of some of Nepal’s most famous mountains, especially from high points like Karpu Danda, Thurju, and Gurung Deurali:

  • Annapurna II and Annapurna IV glowing at sunrise
  • Lamjung Himal, very close and clear
  • The tall peaks of Manaslu (8163 m) and Himalchuli to the northeast
  • On a clear day, you may also see Dhaulagiri and Ganesh Himal

The mountain views are especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset, offering peaceful moments with nature.

Since it’s a newly explored and less-developed route, there are limited or no established lodges or teahouses in many parts of the trail, especially in the higher sections like Karpu Danda, Tapro, Thulek, Thurju, and Gurung Deurali. Most groups rely on tents, kitchen staff, and full camping support, including porters and guides who are familiar with the trail. However, in lower villages like Tangting, Timang, and Besisahar, homestay or basic lodge accommodation may be available.

If you’re looking for a trek that’s quiet, meaningful, and connected to real local life, the Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail is a great choice. It’s more than a trek, it’s a walk through the culture, history, and natural beauty of the Gurung people. With experienced guides and porters from Asian Adventure Treks & Expedition already working on this route, you can enjoy this new trail comfortably and safely.

Essential Information

Permits Required For Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail in Nepal

To complete the Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail (GHTT), you’ll need the following trekking permits:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): This is the main permit required to enter and trek within the Annapurna Conservation Area, which covers most of the GHTT route.
  • Optional - Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) Card: This card is used to register trekkers for safety and record-keeping purposes. However, in recent years, TIMS is not always mandatory on every trail, and in many cases, only the ACAP permit is sufficient for the Gurung Heritage Trail.

Note: Our team at Asian Adventure Treks & Expedition handles all the necessary permit arrangements for you. You’ll receive all required documents before the trek begins, so you can focus on enjoying the journey without any hassle.

Best Time For Gurung Heritage Trekking In Nepal?

The best time to trek the Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail (GHTT) is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons.

  • Spring (March–May): This is a beautiful time when the weather is clear, temperatures are moderate, and rhododendrons and wildflowers bloom across the hillsides. Mountain views are sharp and days are longer, ideal for trekking and camping.
  • Autumn (September–November): This is the most popular season for trekking in Nepal due to its stable weather, clear skies, and excellent visibility of the Himalayas. Cultural festivals like Dashain and Tihar also fall during this time, offering a richer experience.

Trekking in the right season ensures better weather, safer trails, and a more enjoyable overall experience. Our team at Asian Adventure Treks & Expedition helps you plan your trek during the most suitable time based on your preferences and fitness level.

Meals & Accomodation during Gurung Heritage Trekking - Camping Trek in Annapurna

About Food:

  • During camping days, meals are prepared by the trekking team and usually include local Nepali dishes such as dal bhat (lentils and rice), vegetable curry, soups, and occasional western options like pasta or noodles. The food is nutritious and freshly cooked at the campsite.
  • While staying in lodges, you can choose from simple menus offering local and some western-style meals. The quality is good but expect simpler options compared to city restaurants.

Difficulty Level of Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail (GHTT) In Nepal

The Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail (GHTT) is considered a moderate to moderately challenging trek. It involves trekking through diverse terrain, including forest paths, steep ridges, high-altitude passes, and remote villages. Here are some points to consider about the difficulty:

  • Fitness: You should have a good level of fitness and be comfortable walking 5–7 hours daily on uneven and sometimes steep trails.
  • Altitude: The trek reaches elevations of around 4,900 meters (Gurung Deurali), so some altitude acclimatization is necessary to avoid sickness.
  • Trail Conditions: The route is less developed and less crowded, with some sections requiring careful footing and hiking on narrow ridges or rocky paths.
  • Camping: Since much of the trek involves camping in remote areas, you should be prepared for simpler accommodations and variable weather conditions.
  • Experience: While prior trekking experience is helpful, it’s not mandatory. Beginners who are physically fit and mentally prepared can complete the trek with the right guidance.

Overall, the GHTT is best suited for trekkers who enjoy cultural immersion, natural beauty, and are ready for a moderately demanding but rewarding adventure in a quieter part of the Annapurna region.

Altitude Sickness & Remedies on Gurung Heritage Trek

The Gurung Heritage Trekking Trail reaches elevations up to around 4910 meters (Gurung Deurali), where some trekkers may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness – AMS) due to lower oxygen levels.
