Why Is Dashain Such a Grand Festival for Nepalese People?
Dashain, also known as Bada Dashain or Vijaya Dashami, is Nepal’s most widely celebrated Hindu festival. It is traditionally observed over approximately 15 days, beginning with Ghatasthapana and concluding with Kojagrat Purnima.
The festival honours Goddess Durga and celebrates the triumph of good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Durga defeated the demon Mahishasura, restoring peace and balance to the world. The festival is also associated with Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana.
However, Dashain means much more than religious worship. It is a time for family reunions, forgiveness, gratitude, new beginnings and blessings for a prosperous year ahead.
Many Nepalese people living and working in Kathmandu or other cities travel to their hometowns and villages to celebrate with their families. Homes are cleaned, new clothes are purchased, traditional meals are prepared, and elders bless younger family members.
The festival also reflects Nepal’s rich cultural diversity. Although rituals differ between communities and regions, the spirit of family, respect and togetherness remains central to the celebrations.
For visitors, Dashain offers an opportunity to understand the values that shape Nepalese society and experience the warmth of Nepalese hospitality.

What is the auspicious Dashain tika time in 2026?
According to Nepal’s Panchanga Nirnayak Bikas Samiti, the auspicious time for receiving Dashain tika in 2026 is:
10:26 AM Nepal Standard Time (NPT) on Wednesday, 21 October 2026.
The immersion of Goddess Durga’s idol is scheduled for 8:49 AM that morning. Although 10:26 AM is the designated auspicious time, people can receive tika and blessings from their elders throughout Vijaya Dashami.
Tika is a mixture of red vermilion, rice and yoghurt, while jamara consists of sacred seedlings grown during the opening days of the festival. Together, they are offered as blessings for good health, happiness, prosperity and long life.
If you are visiting a Nepalese family during Dashain, receiving tika may become one of the most memorable cultural experiences of your trip.
Note: Festival dates and auspicious times should be checked against the official Nepali calendar and local family traditions when making specific arrangements.
How Do People Celebrate Dashain for Ten Days?
The first ten days of Dashain are especially significant, with each day connected to religious rituals, worship and traditional celebrations.
Day 1: Ghatasthapana
Ghatasthapana marks the beginning of Dashain. Families establish a sacred vessel, or kalash, and sow barley seeds in a prepared area of the house or prayer room. The seedlings grow into jamara, which will be used during the tika ceremony.
The ritual marks the beginning of prayers dedicated to Goddess Durga.

Days 2–6: Navaratri
During Navaratri, devotees worship the different forms of Goddess Durga. Many people visit temples, observe fasts, offer prayers and participate in family rituals.
In Kathmandu Valley, temples and sacred sites become important places of worship during this period. The atmosphere reflects devotion and anticipation as families prepare for the main festival days.
Day 7: Fulpati
Fulpati is one of the important traditional occasions of Dashain. Sacred flowers, leaves and other auspicious plants form part of the rituals associated with the day.
In Kathmandu, traditional ceremonies and processions add to the festive atmosphere. The day is also associated with preparations for the major celebrations that follow.
Day 8: Maha Ashtami
Maha Ashtami is dedicated to Goddess Durga and her powerful forms. Families and devotees perform special prayers and rituals at home and in temples.
Animal sacrifices are part of some traditional observances, although practices vary among families and communities. Visitors can respectfully experience the religious atmosphere without participating in rituals.
Day 9: Mahanavami
Mahanavami marks another important day of worship. Many people perform special pujas, and vehicles, tools and machinery may be worshipped for protection and good fortune.
In Kathmandu, Taleju Temple at Kathmandu Durbar Square traditionally opens to the public on this occasion, offering a rare opportunity to observe an important cultural and religious tradition. Access and arrangements may vary each year.
Day 10: Vijaya Dashami — The Main Tika Day
Vijaya Dashami is the emotional centrepiece of Dashain. Families gather to receive tika and jamara from their elders, who offer blessings for happiness, good health, success and longevity.
Younger relatives visit parents, grandparents and other senior family members. Elders may also give dakshina, a monetary gift offered as part of the blessing.
People wear new clothes, share festive meals and visit relatives throughout the day. Many families continue exchanging tika and blessings over the following days, making the celebration longer than a single day.
For international visitors, this is one of the best opportunities to learn about Nepalese family values and traditional hospitality, provided they are invited to participate by a local host.

Days 11–15: Continuing Celebrations and Kojagrat Purnima
The festive spirit continues after Vijaya Dashami as families visit relatives, exchange blessings and enjoy time together.
The final day, Kojagrat Purnima, falls on 25 October 2026. It is associated with the full moon and worship of Goddess Lakshmi in many Hindu traditions.
By this time, families gradually return to their everyday routines, although the warmth and memories of Dashain remain long after the festival ends.
Does the Festival Time Affect Your Travel Plans in Nepal?
Yes. Dashain is a wonderful time to experience Nepalese culture, but it can also affect transport, business hours and travel arrangements. With a little preparation, you can enjoy your holiday comfortably.
1. Domestic Transport and Flights
Many Nepalese people travel to their hometowns during Dashain. Road transport can become particularly busy before the main festival days, while some routes may have fewer services during the holidays.
Domestic flights generally continue to operate according to their schedules, but availability and demand can vary.
Our recommendation: Book domestic flights and long-distance transport in advance, especially if your itinerary includes travel around 17–22 October 2026.
2. Shops, Restaurants and Local Businesses
Some shops, offices, restaurants and family-run businesses may close or operate with reduced hours during the main festival days. Tourist-oriented services may remain available, but arrangements can differ by location.
In Kathmandu, some areas may feel quieter as residents leave the city to celebrate with their families.
Our recommendation: Confirm restaurant bookings, sightseeing arrangements and essential services before your visit.
3. Trekking and Adventure Holidays
Dashain takes place during Nepal’s popular autumn trekking season, when many travellers visit the Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu and other Himalayan regions.
Trekking can be an excellent choice during Dashain, as the season often offers favourable mountain conditions. However, weather, trail conditions, flight availability and accommodation must always be considered.
Popular routes and domestic flights may be busy, so early planning is advisable. If your itinerary includes a guide, porter, private vehicle or domestic flight, confirm all arrangements before departure.
At Asian Adventure Treks & Expedition, we recommend planning your trekking itinerary around your preferred travel dates and confirming logistics well in advance.
4. Cultural Sightseeing in Kathmandu
Dashain offers a different perspective on Kathmandu. You may find fewer people and less traffic in some parts of the city, while temples and religious sites remain important centres of worship.
However, opening hours and access to particular attractions can change during the festival. Some ceremonies are primarily intended for worshippers, so visitors should follow local guidance, ask permission before photographing people and dress respectfully.
If you wish to experience Dashain traditions, a knowledgeable local guide can help you understand their cultural significance and identify suitable opportunities to observe them.
5. Is Dashain a Good Time to Visit Nepal?
Absolutely. Dashain can be a rewarding time to visit if you want to combine Nepal’s natural beauty with its living cultural traditions.
You can plan a Himalayan trek, explore historic Kathmandu Valley, visit traditional villages or enjoy a private cultural tour. The key is to allow flexibility in your schedule and make advance arrangements for transport and accommodation.
If your priority is witnessing particular Dashain rituals, discuss your dates and interests with your tour operator before finalising your itinerary.
