Manaslu Circuit Trek: Journey around the 8th Highest Peak

Manaslu Circuit Trek is a beautiful, culturally rich, naturally astonishing, and challenging high-altitude trekking which takes you around Mount Manaslu (8163 m) —the 8th highest mountain in the world, located just east of the Annapurna range. This trek is a true hidden gem for adventure lovers, offering a raw and peaceful experience far from other popular trails in Nepal.

Nepal Manaslu Trekking trail was opened to foreign trekkers in 1992, and since then, it has gained popularity for its untouched beauty, rich culture, and challenging terrain. The route follows the Budi Gandaki River, passing through lush forests, traditional villages, and dramatic mountain landscapes, eventually leading to the Larkya La Pass (5200 m); one of the most stunning viewpoints in the Himalayas.

Along Manaslu Trek, you’ll walk through remote Tibetan-influenced villages like Samagaun and Samdo, explore ancient monasteries, and soak in the deep spiritual and cultural atmosphere of the region. The people here live simply, and their warm hospitality will stay with you long after the trek ends. For the similar Tibetan culture experience and to lengthen the trek then Tsum Valley Trek can be done.

This trek is not just about mountains—though the views of Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ganesh Himal, and other snow-covered peaks are breathtaking. It's also about the journey: spotting rare wildlife, crossing suspension bridges, and witnessing the harmony of nature, culture, and religion in one of Nepal’s most beautiful valleys. With the completion of Manaslu Trek, you will also complete the middle portion of Great Himalayan Trial.

There are also exciting side trips you can take, such as a hike to Manaslu Base Camp or a spiritual visit to Dudh Pokhari, a sacred milky-white lake worshipped by both Hindus and Buddhists. After crossing Larkya La Pass, the trail eventually merges with the Annapurna region—giving you a sense of completion and connection with Nepal’s iconic trekking routes.

Overall, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is perfect for those looking for naturally beautiful, challenging, and deeply rewarding Himalayan experience.

Who can do Manaslu Circuit Trekking in Nepal?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a beautiful journey through remote Himalayan landscapes, rich Tibetan-influenced culture, and breathtaking mountain scenery. It’s a perfect blend of physical challenge and authentic adventure. While the trek is considered moderately challenging due to its high altitude and rugged terrain, it is absolutely doable for trekkers with the right mindset and preparation. Manaslu Circuit Trek is suitable for:

  • Physically Fit Beginners (with Guide): Even if you’re new to multi-day trekking, you can complete the Manaslu Circuit if you are in good shape, enjoy walking 6–7 hours a day, and are mentally prepared for a remote, high-altitude journey. Since this is a restricted area trek, traveling with a licensed guide is mandatory—which adds to the safety and support.
  • Intermediate to Experienced Trekkers: Perfect for those who have done previous hikes or treks and are looking for something more adventurous. The daily altitude gain, river crossings, and mountain pass (Larkya La Pass at 5,160m) offer a satisfying challenge.
  • Small Groups, Adventure Seekers & Culture Lovers: Manaslu Circuit is ideal for trekkers who want an off-the-beaten-path experience with meaningful cultural interaction. It’s best enjoyed in small groups, and is well-suited for those seeking peaceful trails, traditional village life, and jaw-dropping Himalayan views.

This trek can be customized based on your fitness, interests, and available time. With proper acclimatization, a supportive team, and the right mindset, the Manaslu Circuit Trek welcomes anyone with a love for mountains and a spirit for adventure.

Alternatives for Manaslu Circuit Trek

If you're interested in the Manaslu region but looking for alternative trekking options based on your time, fitness level, or trekking style, there are several great routes within and around the Manaslu area itself. These alternatives still offer remote beauty, mountain views, and cultural richness but with varied duration and intensity.

Short Manaslu Trek (10–12 Days):
Perfect for those with limited time but still wanting to experience the charm of the Manaslu region. This version covers the scenic middle stretch of the trail—up to Samagaun or Samdo—and returns without crossing Larkya La Pass. It offers a taste of the remote villages, Tibetan culture, and stunning views.

Manaslu Circuit + Tsum Valley Trek (18–21 Days):
A great option if you want a deeper cultural experience. The Tsum Valley is a hidden spiritual gem known for its ancient monasteries, friendly locals, and untouched Tibetan traditions. Combining it with the full Manaslu Circuit makes for an enriching and extended adventure.

Tsum Valley Trek Only (12–14 Days):
For those seeking a less physically demanding and culturally immersive trek, the Tsum Valley on its own is a rewarding choice. It avoids high passes but offers close-up views of Ganesh Himal and a peaceful journey through sacred Buddhist villages.

Manaslu Circuit with Annapurna Extension:
After crossing Larkya La Pass, the trail joins the Annapurna region. You can extend your adventure further into the Annapurna Circuit or even trek down to Tilicho Lake or Jomsom/Muktinath, depending on your timeframe.

These treks can all be customized according to your holiday duration, interests, and physical capacity—whether you're after high passes, spiritual depth, or shorter treks with fewer crowds.

One of the most popular options is a hike to Manaslu Base Camp (approx. 4800 m), which takes about 6–7 hours round trip. The trail is challenging but incredibly rewarding, offering up-close views of Mt. Manaslu, glaciers, and Himalayan peaks.

If you don’t feel like doing a long hike, you can take a short walk to Birendra Lake, a beautiful glacial lake about an hour from the village. The lake has calm, turquoise water and is surrounded by mountains—it's a perfect place to relax.

Another nice option is a visit to Pungyen Gompa, a peaceful monastery on a hill with wide views of the valley and nearby mountains. It's a quiet, spiritual spot and shows the Tibetan culture of the area.

You’ll also see prayer flags and stone mani walls, showing the strong Tibetan culture in the area. Difficulty Level of Manaslu Circuit Trek

Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a hard trek, ideal for those seeking adventure in a less crowded and more remote part of Nepal. Graded at 3 out of 5 in difficulty, it’s slightly harder than the Annapurna Base Camp trek but less technical than the Everest Base Camp trek. Trekkers typically walk 6 to 7 hours a day on varied terrain—ranging from steep ascents and descents to rocky trails and narrow paths.

During the Manaslu trek, the highest point, Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), presents a demanding but rewarding challenge, with panoramic Himalayan views making the effort worthwhile. Proper acclimatization days are included in the itinerary to help reduce the risk of altitude sickness as you gradually ascend from 700 m to above 5,000 m.

To fully enjoy the Manaslu Circuit, trekkers should have a good level of physical fitness, including experience with regular walking, hiking, or light cardio training like jogging or gym workouts. The trail is more rugged and remote compared to popular routes like Annapurna or Everest, with fewer lodges and simpler facilities—so a sense of adventure and patience goes a long way. A licensed guide is mandatory and essential for navigating the less-developed paths, river crossings, and occasional loose stone sections.

With steady preparation—cardio fitness, some uphill training, and comfort with long days of hiking—the Manaslu Circuit is an achievable and deeply rewarding adventure. Overall, this Nepal Manaslu Circuit Trek offers an immersive Himalayan experience with stunning scenery, authentic culture, and a true sense of wilderness.
