Upon reaching Besisahar, you will change to a local private jeep for the adventurous mountain road journey to Dharapani. The road follows the banks of the Marsyangdi River, offering spectacular views of lush hills, cascading waterfalls, and charming settlements. As the journey continues, you will witness the traditional lifestyle of local villagers, terraced fields, dense forests, and impressive waterfalls before finally arriving at Dharapani, a charming village situated at the entrance to the upper Annapurna and Manang regions. At Dharapani, your guide will enter your permits to trek ahead to Annapurna Circuit Trek, as well as it is the permit entry point for ending Manaslu Circuit Trek.

After having breakfast in the morning, you will begin for the first day of trekking in the Annapurna region towards - Annapurna Circuit & Tilicho Lake Trek. On the first day you will be heading towards Chame, the administrative headquarters of Manang District.

The trail follows a combination of gradual ascents and relatively flat sections, mostly along the jeep road, while passing through beautiful pine, oak, and maple forests sideby. Throughout the day, you will walk alongside the roaring Marsyangdi River and enjoy the ever-changing mountain scenery.

As you continue, you will pass through traditional Tibetan-influenced settlements adorned with colorful prayer flags, ancient chortens, mani walls, and apple orchards. The route takes you through the charming villages of Bagarchhap and Danakyu before reaching Timang, a beautiful Gurung village where you will stop for lunch. Timang also serves as the starting point for the remote Namun Bhanjyang Trek.

After lunch, the trail continues through dense forests and small settlements before reaching Koto, the gateway to the remote Nar and Phu Valleys. From here, a gentle walk 1 hour trek brings you to Chame.

Upon arrival in Chame, you will be rewarded with magnificent views of Lamjung Himal (6983 m), Annapurna II (7937 m), and, on clear days, distant views of Mount Manaslu (8163 m). Chame is a lively mountain town with shops, bakeries, pharmacies, and trekking stores where you can purchase any last-minute essentials, equipment, or medicines required for the journey ahead.

After checking into your lodge, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings. Overnight stay at a lodge in Chame.

NOTE:

It is also possible to drive directly from Besisahar to Manang in a single day, which takes approximately 8–9 hours and reduces the trek by two days. However, we highly recommend trekking from Dharapani, as the gradual ascent provides better acclimatization and significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness during the higher sections of the trek.

chame-1

After breakfast, you will continue the trek towards the beautiful village of Upper Pisang, gradually entering the drier and more Tibetan-influenced landscapes of the Manang region.

Today's trail follows a gentle ascent, mostly along the jeep road, through dense forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron. The route offers spectacular mountain scenery and several opportunities to enjoy the changing landscapes of the Annapurna region.

The village is also home to members of the Gurung community, one of Nepal's major ethnic groups. You can rest here for a while and try the apple juice / apple tea / apple pie.

Continuing onward, you will cross the Marsyangdi River via a suspension bridge and gradually ascend to Dhikur Pokhari (3060 m), where you will stop for lunch. After breakfast, continue the journey towards one of the popular and beautiful village of Annapurna Region - Manang. The route to Manang is highly recommended as it offers better acclimatization, rich cultural experiences, and some of the most spectacular mountain panoramas of the entire Annapurna Circuit.

As you begin the trek to Manang, on the way you can explore Green Lake, take picture and enjoy the nature for a while with the amazing morning views of the mountains.

Then continue the trek with a steep ascent through alpine forests and dry mountain landscapes until you reach the beautiful village of Ghyaru after approximately three hours of trekking.

Ghyaru (3570 m) is a traditional Tibetan Gurung settlement known for its stone houses, ancient chortens, and colorful prayer flags. You can rest for a while at Ghyaru Monastery and explore its peaceful surroundings. The monastery is deeply connected to the village's heritage and holds great cultural and spiritual significance for the local community. According to local legends, the village of Ghyaru was originally founded by a Tibetan monk who established the area's first gompa (monastery), around which the settlement gradually developed. The monastery offers not only a glimpse into the region's rich Buddhist traditions but also spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and the Manang Valley below.

Continuing along the high trail for another 2 hours, you will arrive at the picturesque village of Ngawal (3660 m), where you will stop for lunch. Ngawal is one of the most beautiful villages in the region and is known for its traditional Tibetan architecture, ancient monastery, and well-preserved Buddhist culture. Take some time to explore the village and observe the unique lifestyle of the local inhabitants. Ngawal is also the ending point of Nar - Phu Valley Trek after crossing the  Kangla Pass (5306 m).

After lunch, the trail gradually descends through juniper and pine forests before reaching Braga (3439 m), another culturally significant settlement. Here, you can visit the famous Braga Gompa, one of the oldest monasteries in the Annapurna region, believed to be more than 900 years old. The monastery houses ancient Buddhist scriptures, statues, and beautiful murals, reflecting the deep spiritual heritage of the region.

From Braga, it is an easy walk along a relatively flat trail to reach Manang (3540 m), the main settlement of the upper Manang Valley. monastery-in-annapurna-trekking-1

Today is an important day for acclimatization, allowing your body to gradually adjust to the higher altitude before continuing towards Thorong La Pass. Rather than taking a complete rest, it is recommended to hike to a higher elevation and return to Manang for the night.

There are several excellent hiking options around Manang, each offering stunning landscapes, cultural experiences, and panoramic mountain views.

Option 1: Hike to Gangapurna Glacier and Viewpoint (Approx. 3 hours)

This is the most popular and highly recommended acclimatization hike. The trail ascends to the viewpoint above Gangapurna Lake, offering spectacular views of the turquoise glacial lake, the lower Manang Valley, Tanki Manang, the Hundred Lama Monastery, and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The short hike is ideal for acclimatization while rewarding you with magnificent scenery.

Option 2: Hike to Milarepa Cave (Approx. 6 hours)

Another fascinating option is a visit to the historic Milarepa Cave, located on the opposite side of the valley from the Ice Lake trail near Braga. The cave is associated with the famous Tibetan Buddhist saint and yogi Milarepa, who is believed to have meditated here centuries ago. The hike offers beautiful mountain views and a chance to experience the spiritual heritage of the region.

Option 3: Hike to Ice Lake (Kicho Tal) – 4,600 m (Approx. 8 hours)

For those seeking a more challenging acclimatization hike, the trek to Ice Lake (Kicho Tal) is highly rewarding. The trail climbs nearly 1,000 meters above Manang, passing through alpine meadows and rugged mountain terrain before reaching the pristine high-altitude lake.

From Ice Lake, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Annapurna II (7,937 m), Annapurna III (7,555 m), Gangapurna (7,455 m), Pisang Peak (6,091 m), Thorong Peak (6,144 m), Tilicho Peak (7,134 m), Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), and the Chulu Peaks.

If you choose this hike, it is advisable to carry a packed lunch from Manang, as there are no tea houses or lodges along the route. After spending some time at the lake, you will descend back to Manang through the same way.

The remainder of the day can be spent exploring the charming village of Manang, visiting local bakeries and monasteries, or simply relaxing while enjoying the spectacular Himalayan scenery. You can take hot shower in Manang and enjoy your day of acclimatization before heading towards the high altitude days. Overnight stay at a lodge / hotel in Manang.

gangapurna-glacier

After breakfast, you will leave Manang and begin your journey towards Sri Kharka via Khangsar, a peaceful settlement located on the route to Tilicho Lake. Today's trek is relatively short and not very strenuous, allowing your body additional time to acclimatize to the increasing altitude.

The trail initially follows the upper route out of Manang, crossing a small river before traversing through dry alpine landscapes and scattered coniferous forests. As you leave the main Annapurna Circuit trail behind, the scenery becomes more remote and rugged.

After about 3 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Khangsar (3734 m), the last permanent village on the way to Tilicho Lake. Khangsar is a traditional Tibetan-influenced settlement where the local people still preserve their unique culture, customs, and way of life. The village offers a wonderful opportunity to observe the traditional stone houses, prayer flags, and ancient Buddhist traditions of the Manang region.

Continuing beyond Khangsar, you will pass through old monastery and gradually ascend towards Sri Kharka. Along the way, magnificent views begin to unfold, including Chulu East (6584 m), Chulu West (6419 m), and so on..

Upon reaching Sri Kharka (4050 m), you will enjoy lunch while taking in the spectacular mountain scenery. The remainder of the day is free to relax, acclimatize, and prepare for the upcoming journey to Tilicho Base Camp and Tilicho Lake.

Surrounded by barren high-altitude landscapes and towering Himalayan peaks, Sri Kharka offers a peaceful and scenic setting for an overnight stay. Overnight stay at a lodge in Sri Kharka.

-ri-kharka

After breakfast, you will continue your journey towards Tilicho Base Camp, the gateway to one of the world's highest lakes - Tilicho Lake. From Sri Kharka, there are no jeep / road trails till date, so you will be walking on trekking trials only.

Today's trek is relatively short but requires careful walking, as the trail traverses several landslide-prone sections along steep mountain slopes. Although the route can be challenging in places, it rewards trekkers with spectacular scenery and dramatic landscapes.

As you make your way along the narrow trail, you will witness impressive rock formations, rugged cliffs, and magnificent views of Tilicho Peak (7134 m) and the surrounding Himalayan ranges. The barren high-altitude terrain and towering mountains create a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.

After crossing the landslide areas, the trail continues along a rocky path before gradually reaching Tilicho Base Camp. Nestled beneath the towering peaks, the base camp offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and serves as the starting point for the early morning hike to Tilicho Lake.

Upon arrival, check into your lodge and spend the remainder of the day resting and acclimatizing. Since the next day's excursion to Tilicho Lake begins early in the morning, it is advisable to relax and prepare for one of the highlights of the Annapurna region. There are basic lodges in Tilicho Base Camp with not hot shower facility. Overnight stay at a lodge in Tilicho Base Camp.

tilicho-base-camo

Today is one of the major highlights of the trek as you journey to the spectacular Tilicho Lake (4919 m), one of the highest lakes in the world. Surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, the lake is renowned for its breathtaking beauty and pristine alpine setting.

Tilicho Lake was famously described by a French expedition team as "The Great Ice Lake." The lake also holds great religious significance in Hinduism and is believed to have been mentioned in the ancient epic, the Ramayana. The area is also the starting point for adventurous trekkers crossing the challenging Mesokanto La Pass (5099 m) to continue towards Jomsom and the Mustang region.

To avoid the strong afternoon winds that are common in this area, you will wake up early morning, around 5:00 AM, and have breakfast before beginning the hike. The trail ascends gradually along rocky slopes and glacial terrain for about 3 to 4 hours until you reach the magnificent Tilicho Lake.

Upon arrival, you will be rewarded with extraordinary views of the turquoise lake surrounded by the towering peaks of Tilicho Peak (7134 m), the Annapurna Range, and Nilgiri Himal (7061 m). The tranquil setting and dramatic Himalayan backdrop make this one of the most memorable experiences of the Annapurna region.

After spending some time enjoying the scenery and taking photographs, you will descend back to Tilicho Base Camp, where you will have lunch and take a short rest.

In the afternoon, you will continue descending for another 3 hours to Sri Kharka through the same way. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife such as Himalayan yaks, blue sheep (bharal), and various high-altitude birds that inhabit this remote region.

Upon reaching Sri Kharka, you can relax and reflect on an unforgettable day spent at one of the Himalayas' most beautiful lakes. Overnight stay at a lodge in Sri Kharka.

tilicho-lake-in-winter-trek

After breakfast, you will leave Sri Kharka and rejoin the main Annapurna Circuit trail, heading towards the high-altitude settlement of Yak Kharka.

The trek begins along a relatively gentle and rocky trail through barren landscapes and scattered coniferous vegetation. As you gain elevation, the route offers magnificent views of the surrounding Himalayan giants, including the Annapurna Range, Chulu West (6419 m), Pisang Peak (6091 m), and the villages of Tanki Manang and the upper Manang Valley below.

After a few hours of gradual ascent, you will reach a high ridge that provides spectacular panoramic mountain views. From here, the trail descends for about an hour to a wooden bridge over the Marsyangdi River. After crossing the bridge, you will continue with a gentle ascent for another hour before arriving at Yak Kharka.

Yak Kharka, meaning "yak pasture," is a small seasonal settlement traditionally used by local herders for grazing their yaks and livestock during the summer months. Surrounded by rugged hills and snow-capped peaks, the area offers a peaceful atmosphere and stunning Himalayan scenery.

Upon arrival, check into your lodge and spend the remainder of the day resting and acclimatizing as you prepare for the higher elevations ahead. Overnight stay at a lodge in Yak Kharka.

yak-kharka-of-annapurna-circuit

Today, after breakfast, you begin your trek towards Thorong Phedi, the final stop before crossing the famous Thorong La Pass. The trek takes around 3 to 4 hours and involves a gradual ascent, so it is important to walk slowly and take regular breaks to adjust to the increasing altitude.

Leaving Yak Kharka, the trail climbs steadily to Ledar (4200 m), offering magnificent views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks and rugged mountain landscapes. From Ledar, the path descends slightly before crossing the Marsyangdi River on a wooden bridge. After crossing the river, you ascend through a landslide-prone section for about 40 minutes until reaching a small teashop, where you can rest, enjoy some refreshments, and admire the dramatic scenery.

Continuing onward, the trail follows a narrow path across the mountainside before descending gently to Thorong Phedi. Despite its name, Thorong Phedi is not a traditional village but a small settlement consisting of a few lodges nestled amidst a rugged alpine landscape. The name "Phedi" means "foot of the hill," perfectly describing its location at the base of Thorong La Pass.

After arriving at Thorong Phedi, spend the rest of the day relaxing and preparing for the challenging pass crossing the following morning. There will be very basic lodge in Thorong Phedi. Stay overnight at a lodge in Thorong Phedi.

thorang-phedi

Today is one of the most important and memorable days of the trek as you cross Thorong La Pass, one of the highest trekking passes in the world and the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit.

To avoid strong afternoon winds and to ensure a safe crossing, you will wake up early morning around 5:00 A.M. and have breakfast before beginning the ascent. The trail initially climbs steeply from High Camp and then follows a series of gradual zigzag paths. After passing a small tea shop, the trail continues steadily uphill until you finally reach the prayer-flag-covered summit of Thorong La Pass after approximately 4 to 5 hours of trekking.

Standing at the top of the Thorong La Pass is an unforgettable experience. On a clear day, fromt the pass you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri Range, Mustang Himal, Thorong Peak, Nilgiri Himal, and numerous surrounding snow-capped peaks. After celebrating your achievement, taking photographs, and enjoying the magnificent scenery, you will begin your descent into the Mustang region.

The trail descends steeply for about 2-3 hours till Chabarbu (4200 m) / Lower Phedi of Mustang, where you can stop for short rest. From here, the descent becomes gentler, and after another 2 hours of walking, you will arrive at the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath (3760 m).

Muktinath is one of Nepal's most revered religious sites and holds immense significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. For Buddhists, the site is known as Chumig Gyatsa, meaning "Hundred Waters," while for Hindus, Muktinath means "Lord of Liberation (Moksha)." The temple complex is famous for its 108 sacred water spouts, where Hindu pilgrims take ritual baths, believing that doing so washes away sins and grants spiritual liberation. The site also contains important Buddhist shrines, including statues of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), Lord Buddha, ancient prayer wheels, and beautiful Buddhist thangkas. Another unique feature of Muktinath is the eternal flame, a natural gas flame that has been continuously burning for centuries and is considered highly sacred by devotees of both religions.

After a long and rewarding day crossing Thorong La Pass, you can relax and enjoy the spiritual atmosphere of this remarkable pilgrimage destination. Overnight stay at a lodge in Muktinath.

muktinath-temple

Early in the morning, visit the sacred Muktinath Temple, one of the most important pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. You can explore the temple complex, take blessings at the 108 holy water spouts, and enjoy the peaceful spiritual atmosphere with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. After the visit, return to the lodge for breakfast and prepare for your journey to Jomsom.

Today, you have 3 options: either trek to Jomsom or drive to Jomsom by jeep / drive to Pokhara by jeep.

For those choosing the trekking route, the trail follows the less-travelled path through Muktinath – Lubra Pass – Lupra – Thini – Jomsom, taking around 6 to 7 hours. The route descends gradually through the arid landscapes of Lower Mustang and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the region's unique culture and scenery.
